Salary Range:

$179,000.00 - $211,000.00

What's the role?

The Privacy Engineering team is responsible for building systems and collaborating with other platform and infrastructure teams to ensure personal data is processed or accessed according to customer expectations. As Etsy's engineering systems become increasingly complex, our role in supporting privacy alongside fast paced business goals makes the work dynamic, ambitious and rewarding.

The Privacy Engineering team is seeking a Senior Privacy Software Engineer II to help lead the team through design, implementation and collaboration with key team members as we work to make privacy the default in our complex engineering landscape. This position will require executing complex projects, using strong communication skills to work with engineers of different types as well as cross-functional stakeholders from different backgrounds and technical levels. The right candidate for this job will have experience with privacy infrastructure at scale, demonstrated systems design and implementation, and experience setting technical direction that is aligned with business goals.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager of the Privacy Engineering team. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What's this team like at Etsy?

• Privacy Engineering is a multidisciplinary team that is situated alongside Security. The team is responsible for ensuring that Etsy product and engineering teams launch features that respect customer privacy and uphold our commitments to our customers.

• As both privacy practitioners and software engineers, we build privacy infrastructure that ensures Etsy is compliant with privacy regulations worldwide. We conduct Technical Privacy Reviews, build customer-facing privacy features, design privacy infrastructure and drive company-wide data governance initiatives.

• This team collaborates closely with privacy legal counsel and product engineering teams across Etsy.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Architecting solutions for significantly complex, unscoped problems

• Able to lead the team through discovery, ideation, constructive debate, conclusion, landmarks, execution and long-term health monitoring

• Balanced portfolio of written and verbal communication, personal mentorship with peers, and code contributions. The balance will change as the work changes

• Cross-functional and cross-team collaboration. We are working to improve our privacy posture across Etsy systems and this requires significant investment in relationship-building and alignment

• Code, product and architecture reviews for teams looking for privacy sign-off or concerns

• Participating in vendor evaluations for privacy tooling where valuable, and designing integration strategies and technical architecture when vendors are procured

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Advanced technical skills, both hands-on-keyboard coding and systems design!

• Experience with PHP, Java or other object-oriented language (we use PHP primarily)

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to provide clear, meaningful, constructive feedback to peers to support their growth

• Ability to convince, empower, and collaborate with team members

• Understanding of privacy regulations, and how implementations map to them. Instincts for privacy tradeoffs

• Working knowledge of privacy principles like data minimization, privacy by design, data anonymization, etc

• Experience with cloud infrastructure, especially Google Cloud Platform products

• Experience working with and integrating third party tools
