Position Purpose:

The Senior Pricing & Promotional Planner will be in our Petco San Diego, CA office, and will be responsible for Omni channel price and promotional strategy, planning and analytics for a group of related departments as well as managing the category management process, business rule delivery, competitive goal positioning and translating category strategies into tangible objectives and execution plans. Responsible for managing and communicating findings and recommendations from the 3rd party price/promo vendor, enhancing service delivery from pricing vendors and driving pricing and promotional insights into the organization. Responsible for building analytical tools, providing analytical support and delivering financial focus to help make sound decisions and developing pricing and promotion strategies that will deliver and maximize EBITDA for the organization. The role also generates reports as needed and partners across the organization to build comprehensive approaches to meet the needs of internal business partners.

Essential Job Functions: The incumbent must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Partner with the merchandising officers, directors and business teams to develop price and promo strategies and business rules, and assure seamless execution of strategies.

  • Enable financial success of departments by delivering pricing and promotion solutions designed to maximize EBITDA.

  • Interact professionally and effectively through excellent written and oral communication skills to all levels of the organization; demonstrate communication and presentation skills.

  • Gather data, analyze information, develop strategic conclusions, and communicate recommendations clearly and effectively with merchandising and marketing partners.

  • Effectively prioritize multiple workflows and projects; to be flexible and work under tight deadlines.

  • Manage relationship with third party price management provider and maximize effectiveness of vendor tools and recommendations.

  • Demonstrate ability to work cross functionally to ensure proper support for the business. Communicate needs to achieve all business objectives.

  • Demonstrate logical analytical abilities, creative problem solving skills, and financially sound judgment.

  • Demonstrate initiative; to be able to work independently and in cross functional teams

  • Ability to think strategically and effectively communicate and implement or incorporate tactical elements to ensure strategic goals are met

  • Identify and leverage best practices and systems usage in order to work efficiently and effectively.

Supervisory Responsibility: None required.

Work Environment:

The majority of job duties are conducted while seated indoors at a computer terminal, with little or no exposure to hazards. Occasional travel may be required for financial presentations or training.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Operations, Economics, Business, Statistics or related, plus a minimum of 5 years of retail pricing, promotion management, planning, inventory management, financial planning or financial analysis experience with demonstrated career progression.

  • Strong aptitude for retail math and analysis, ability to work in a fast paced retail environment with a strong sense of urgency.

  • Ability to communicate and influence decisions to drive the business profitably.

  • Strong understanding of retail Profit &Loss (P&L) and strong communication & presentation skills.

  • Ability to advance to high levels of computer literacy; exposure to relevant planning, finance, analytical, data management systems - systems used: MicroStrategy/Snowflake, Nielsen, Web Scraping.

  • Exposure to assortment and space management tools a plus.

  • Build collaborative partnerships cross-functionally; identify/influence stakeholders; proactively problem solves and recommends solutions.

  • Optimization Mindset - design and develop models/plans to optimize decisions; makes decisions with limited information but also capable to synthesize large quantities of data to drive business decisions.

  • Understands and executes against business strategy and goals.

Function as the project manager for all aspects of the environmental scope, ensuring that each technical discipline is adequately resourced and analyzed. * 20% - Ensure timely and effective communications with project sponsors, internal stakeholders and external regulatory agencies to provide for successful project outcomes.
