Job Summary

The Senior Pre-Award Manager will provide leadership for Sponsored Program Services Pre-Award staff. Responsible for overseeing the successful preparation and submission of grant and contract proposals to funding sponsors. This position will manage the workload and allocate resources appropriately to meet all deadlines for proposal submission. Responsible for providing quality control to proposal development activity. Serve as a resource to all Pre-Award staff by providing expertise and communication related to assigned areas of responsibility. Participate in the revision and development of processes related to supporting proposal development activities. Collaborate with SPS Contracting, SPS Post Award, and SPS Support teams, Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships, and Business Management staff to meet and exceed faculty expectations for services in support of research activities. Responsible for managing and facilitating training and professional development efforts for staff. This position is fully remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Proposal Development
  • Direct the delivery of proposal development services provided for external sponsored funding, Allocate resources to the proposal development process and provide general quality control for proposals prior to submission. Assist Pre-Award staff in proposal development process as needed. Provide assistance and allocate resources to SPS Pre-Award Director and SPS Pre-Award leadership team. Directly assist faculty with proposal development as assigned.
  • Supervision
  • Provide supervision for assigned Sponsored Program Services Pre-Award staff. Set expectations that meet and exceed faculty expectations for services in support of their pre-award activities. Establish expectations, priorities and best practices; facilitate the availability of resources to achieve expectations and provide performance feedback. Develop appropriate staffing plans and provide supervision of staff including, but not limited to, delivering performance evaluations and making recommendations regarding hiring, promotion and terminations. Function as mentor to staff on issues of pre-award policies and procedures. Ensure staff receive adequate training both at the new hire stage and throughout their career.
  • Pre-Award Leadership
  • Provide leadership to all of Pre-Award as a member of the Pre-Award leadership team. Support all Pre-Award staff by serving as a resource to others in Pre-Award, providing proposal reviews across teams as needed, and serving as a back-up to other Pre-Award managers when necessary. Serve in designated roles such as a college liaison or other specifically assigned role to support the overall success of Pre-Award and proposal submissions as Purdue University. Attend Pre-Award leadership meetings to represent assigned staff and participate in strategic planning and goal completion for the unit.
  • Pre-Award Outreach and Liaison
  • Foster an environment for successful implementation of ongoing changes related to sponsor and university systems, processes, and requirements. Serve as a key resource to Principal Investigators in all matters related to University policies and procedures for proposal development and submission. Interpret sponsor policies and regulations and make recommendations of impact on pre-award. Maintain liaison relationships with sponsor officials. Communicate and collaborate with SPS Contracting and Post Award teams to facilitate smooth transitions from proposal to award. Direct and facilitate pre-award training and professional development opportunities as applicable.

  • Coordinate and/or assist with other activities, special projects and reports in coordination with or as assigned by the Director, Pre-Award.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Four more years of research administration or related experience

  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of required education and related work experience

  • Experience in higher education research administration and supervisory experience

  • In lieu of four to five years of research administration experience, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of research administration and supervisory experience

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret and implement policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team

  • Excellent communication (oral & written), planning, problem-solving, analytical, organizational, project management and customer service skills

  • Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels

  • Ability to foster a participative supervisory style that utilizes teamwork to successfully guide the work of others

  • Demonstrated learning orientation to changing technology impacting business processes

  • Personal computer and related software skills, e.g. video conferencing, word processing, spreadsheets, database, data query, Internet, etc.

What Is Helpful:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Management or a related field of study

  • Purdue Sponsored Program Services or Business Management experience
