As a Senior Protection & Control Designer in Engineering Services, you'll provide solutions and services that help our customers protect and control critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide.

As a Senior Power System Designer a typical day might include the following:

  • Create protection and control scheme designs for relay replacement/SCADA upgrade projects for both greenfield and brownfield substations.

  • Prepare CAD drawings for protection, control and automation drawing packages including panel layout, AC/DC schematic and wiring drawings.

  • Provide design engineering support to project technical leads.

  • Prepare technical specifications for review.

  • Provide quality assurance review for drawing packages to ensure high quality of deliverables.

  • Complete assigned work within timelines and budgets with a high level of quality.

  • Develop and maintain a high level of expertise in SEL and industry design practices.

  • Lead in the mentoring and training of interns, drafters and entry level designers.

  • Utilize customer or SEL standards to create project designs and documentation to a high degree of quality under the general supervision of the project technical lead.

  • Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of SEL equipment and solutions for electric power system protection and automation.

  • Develop improvements to available processes and tools and lead creation of process enhancements.

This job might be for you if you have the following:

  • Associate degree in EET, CAD, Drafting, or relevant discipline; or possess equivalent experience for each academic year

  • 9+ years of relevant experience with high voltage electrical design, with over five projects in protective relay controls systems.

  • Ability to learn concepts and technical details of products

  • Ability to work independently, accepting ownership of assigned responsibilities

  • Expert competence in CAD drafting (AUTOCAD or Microstation)

  • Excellent understanding of the installation requirements for protective relays of different type and function

  • Demonstrated presentation skills to engineering groups

  • Willing to travel as needed

  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills

  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess a BSEE, BSET or related design degree from an accredited college or university

  • Experience testing and commissioning protective relay, process control, and SCADA control systems

  • Electrical utility, consulting, or system integrator experience

  • Knowledge of protective relay applications and/or automation applications

Salary Range

We anticipate filling this position as a Senior Designer $33.22 - $51.97 per hour. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
