GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Skilled work in a lead position at the journeyman level on a wide variety of plumbing and other pipe systems. This position works under the direction of the Facilities Director. The distinction between this position and the Plumber position is the volume of work, the technical nature of the jail electronic plumbing systems, as well as the ability to work in the Jail and Courts systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Actively participates in performing craftsman level work as a given assignment requires.

Leads the repairs and ensures replacement of all residential, commercial and industrial plumbing fixtures; broken water lines; unstops sewer lines and drains; clears commode with water closet and sink drains.

Shall rough-in new construction or design and build renovation projects.

Leads the repairs and installs shower valves, shutoff valves, water fountains and mixing valves.

Recommends specific maintenance projects and prepares related reports and/or sketches.

Prepares material and supply requests and properly schedules subordinates. Works in high security, high stress environments.

Troubleshoots and repairs electronic plumbing systems at Jail and Courts Systems.

Determines materials and methods to be used in the performance of specific assignments from initial planning through implementation and completion.

Leads subordinate maintenance mechanics and properly processes documentation of completed and on-going work.

Responds to emergencies and ability to be on call 24/7 as assigned by supervisor.

May monitor progress and craftsmanship of outside contractor's work.

Understand and comply with the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners employee handbook and other established policies and procedures.

Perform other job-related functions as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Plumbing practices in laying out and installing water and other pipe systems and fixtures, plumbing fixtures, materials and tools and their suitability for different types of work and of their application.

Regulations regarding sanitary plumbing system installations.

Irrigation systems including pipes, valves, pumps and wells.

Hydraulics as it relates to flow rates, pipe sizes and pressures.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Use of both hands and finger dexterity. Good hand/eye coordination.

Ability to climb ladders, walking and frequent standing. Ability to lift and or carry 50 pounds. Work environment indoors and outdoors.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Working in or around Jail Building with inmates, tools and chemicals.

 May involve working in a correctional environment which includes jail inmates. The work may be involved in high risk areas which requires special safety precautions. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or equipment.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED:  Safety glasses.

 Ear muffs.   Work with power tools.  Read and understand MSDS Sheets.

As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator.  During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years journeyman's experience in the plumbing trade and in contemporary building preventative maintenance practices, methods, procedures and scheduling.

NOTE: An equivalent combination of experience/training and/or experience may be substituted to meet the above noted minimum qualifications.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Current Florida County Plumbing Journeyman's License or the ability to possess within six months of hire required.

 Valid Florida's Driver's License and must maintain a good driving record. Pay Grade T10

Driving Position - Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.

This is a union position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.
