Summary:

The purpose of this position is to routinely monitor the operation and efficiency of two Pharmaceutical Clean Room facilities and a GMP Warehouse, making adjustments and corrections to maximize uptime and energy efficiency. The position will also be responsible for identifying and implementing upgrade projects intended to improve efficiency and reliability of plant water, steam, CCA, and HVAC systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with external consulting engineers and automation engineers to design and implement utility upgrade projects and energy efficiency controls.

  • Manage general contractors and/or mechanical and electrical trade contractors on medium scale utility upgrade projects.

  • Create, maintain, and report on energy efficiency metrics for operation of the building utility systems.

  • Assess current facility equipment and utilities. Recommend and execute changes to optimize equipment up-time and energy efficiency.

  • Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the plant Pharmaceutical HVAC system and make routine adjustments to maintain the system operating within specification.

  • Serve as BMS (Building Management System) SME (Subject Matter Expert). Use this expertise to lead technical troubleshooting and investigations for HVAC and other plant control issues, including differential pressure balance and temperature control.

  • Maintain facilities departmental GMP compliance by leading technical troubleshooting and write up of facilities department investigations, deviations, and CAPAs managed through the Master Control Software System.

  • Update existing controlled drawings and SOPs as required by engineering projects and corrections identified during maintenance and system operation.

  • When necessary, perform factory inspections of vendor-supplied equipment to ensure the construction and performance meets specifications.

  • Assist in the maintenance of the existing engineering libraries which include drawings, equipment TOPs, specifications and utility capacity schedules.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This person has no direct supervisor responsibilities.

Interaction:

The incumbent works closely with the other Engineering disciplines (Process, Automation, Manufacturing Technical support), Facilities Department, Process Development, and Manufacturing.

Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in Engineering (Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical preferred), or applicable experience required.
  • 8+ years applicable equipment, plant utility, clean utility systems operation and control required
  • 5 years in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry desirable

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with Apogee and/or Desigo Siemens Building Management Systems (BMS)

  • Thorough knowledge of pharmaceutical support utility systems such as central plant chilled water systems and plant steam

  • General knowledge of the operation and design of pharmaceutical utilities, with understanding of HVAC systems.

  • General knowledge of cGMP guidelines with experience in generation of controlled documents such as PM and Operation SOPs for equipment and utility systems.

  • Experience working with and directing general contractors and sub-contractor trades (e.g. mechanical and electrical).

  • Experience in equipment start-up and validation

  • Good organizational and time utilization skills

  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to interact well with others

  • Good written and verbal English communication skills

  • Knowledge of process controls to enhance troubleshooting abilities and to future designs.

Will need to lift and move parts, equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and work from a ladder up to 6 feet high.

The base pay range for this role in California is $96,000 per year to $132,000 per year.

The range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. The range considers a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: geographic markets, business or organizational needs, skill sets, experience, training, licensure, and certifications.
