GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Senior PA for Education in Breast Surgery, in conjunction with the Chief Physician Assistant and the Division Chief, will work to support the educational mission of the division and help to guide its strategic direction. The Senior PA for Education will take a leadership role to increase the collective and individual knowledge level of PA's and other advanced practice students and providers within the Division of Breast Surgery. Clinically, this individual will provide the highest level of preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative and outpatient care under the direction of the supervising physicians and will serve as a bridge between the Breast Surgery Service and other subspecialties within the Breast Oncology Program (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology and Pathology) to promote patient, nursing and advanced practice practitioner education. The Senior PA for Education will also be the Director of the HMS Medical Student Rotation and will participate in the ongoing clinical research activities within the BWH Division of Breast Surgery BWH Breast Service and the Breast Oncology Disease Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Key administrative responsibilities will center around Education and Training initiatives including the following:
Patient Education Champion: Assist in shaping and improving patient education efforts for the Division. Ensure all patient education materials are up to date and relevant to patient care.
Serve as the Rotation Director for Medical Students: Organize and coordinate all of the medical school student's rotation on the Service. Ensure they have a comprehensive education in breast surgery, including exposure to clinic and the operating room as well as focused time in radiology and pathology.
Serve as Lead PA Student Preceptor: Coordinate education of all PA students rotating on the Service. Teach proper clinical techniques and supervise students as they employ new clinical skills needed to assess, treat and manage the care of Breast Surgery Patients.
Organize PA Education Curriculum: Recruit, schedule and execute monthly education sessions for the Division
Serve as PA Shadowing Liaison: The Senior PA for Education will be the main contact person for potential students who are interested in the PA profession. He/she will arrange logistics for students to shadow faculty members in the Division of Breast Surgery for single or multiple days.
Develop Training Programs: He/she will work with Breast PA leadership to identify clinical focus areas for continued skill development. Develop schedule to complete competencies, track performance and foster opportunities for professional growth within the group.
Implement best practices through representation on National Committee's such as the NCCPA and AAPA.
Develop and support education events and resources and ensure maximum group participation
Support ongoing development of training programs and execute on individuals plans as defined by the Division of Breast Surgery leadership.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior PA for Education should display the following skills and take part in the following tasks:
Serves as a primary clinical point of contact for patients with breast cancer treated in the Division of Breast Surgery under direction of supervising physicians.
Works together with providers in other subspecialties to ensure a smooth transition of care for patients receiving multimodality treatment at DF/BWCC.
Performs breast surgery consultations at BWH and DFCI as requested by the attending physician.
Performs follow-up assessments of patients after surgery, including history, physical exam in a physician-supervised clinic at DFCI.
Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
Assists with outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures under the direct supervision of breast surgeons.
Performs outpatient management for removal of drains, sutures, and staples.
Facilitates referral of surgical patients to the DFCI BOC program by consultation with referring providers.
Practices cost effective medicine in an efficient manner, maximizing available resources
Demonstrates expert clinical judgment skills to function in an independent role
Additional duties and responsibilities as required by the department/division
Demonstrates professional collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers
Follows all designated prescriptive practices and monitoring requirements with the designated supervising physician and administrative report
Participates in departmental and organizational committees and programs as appropriate and attends all required meetings, in-services, and professional trainings
Maintains superior interpersonal and communication skills as a member of the healthcare team in order to collaborate effectively with patients, families, staff, and community health workers
Remains actively involved in continuing education with a commitment to self and departmental growth
Adheres to all established safety policies, procedures, and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation
Demonstrates understanding of procedures, policies, and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care

QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
The appropriate candidate will have successfully completed a graduate level physician assistant program (Masters degree) accredited by the Accreditation and Review Committee for Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) or such other accrediting agency as may qualify a graduate to sit for the NCCPA certifying examination
BS/MS joint programs and those candidates with a BS and PA certificate are eligible, but ONLY for those who graduated BEFORE 1995
Must have at least four years of experience practicing as a PA to qualify for the Senior PA position
Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) must be obtained prior to first day of employment
Must hold a current valid license or be eligible for licensure as a physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Must have or eligible for, and maintain, a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration
Must complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each two year period of employment
Must complete the BWH Professionalism Program within three months of date of hire
Must complete the BWH Procedural Sedation Training if deemed necessary
