Salary Range: Up to $59,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Provide advanced-level payroll benefits accounting services for University staff, exercising independent thought and judgment over non-routine and complex payroll, benefit, and accounting issues.

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the application of advanced accounting, benefits, payroll practices, and controls in the preparation of a variety of complex regular and special financial reports and statements in accordance with industry standards and applicable regulations.

  • Must be able to proficiently perform all duties and responsibilities of Payroll Specialist I, Payroll Specialist II, and Payroll Accountant.

  • Accurate and timely completion of the monthly payroll process cycle, and off-cycle payroll process cycle and assist with the semi-monthly payroll process cycle by following the payroll operational process guide.

  • Processes, audits, and maintains payroll reports in respect to appropriate systems to include adjustments and reimbursements from accounts or payroll records.

  • Analyzes, reconciles, and creates adjustments for employee records, status reports, exception reports data files, and benefit records to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policy.

  • Reviews, approves, and processes additional pay requests submitted through the eForm workflow module and other additional pay requests submitted via email.

  • Responsible for the preparation of journal entries, supporting documentation, and financial reports associated with the monthly payroll processing cycle.

  • Compiles and/or prepares data for research or special reports for management and responds to payroll-related inquiries submitted by department business service centers and employees.

  • Provides excellent customer service as defined by departmental customer service standards.

  • Proficient with Banner and Peoplesoft systems to include dataset preparation, reconciliation, and reporting.

  • Maintains excellent communication and working relationships with counterparts in the Office of People Excellence.

  • Assists Sr. Payroll Analyst, Payroll Accountant, and payroll team as needed.

  • Promotes safety and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

  • Five (5) years of professional governmental or commercial accounting experience including a minimum of two (2) years of payroll accounting.

  • Advanced level of proficiency in applying payroll knowledge to payroll, labor, tax, reporting, and policies and practices.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:

  • Office environment.

  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.

  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands:

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.

  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.

This position primarily works remotely in Texas but may work on campus on an infrequent basis (approximately four days or less per month). When an employee is required to work on campus, travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
