SUMMARY

Generation Bio seeks an experienced Patent Attorney / Sr. Patent Attorney to help Generation Bios IP team to successfully develop and implement IP strategies to protect its innovative ceDNA platform, lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems, and rapidly growing pipeline. The successful candidate will possess experience in managing worldwide patent portfolios and pursuing protection and defense of IP assets over the full course of therapeutic development. This position reports to the Director, Intellectual Property.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, file and prosecute U.S., and foreign patent applications in the fields of gene therapy or organic chemistry.
  • Proactively build and expand patent strategies for the company in collaboration with business and R&D departments to ensure long-term competitive advantage.
  • Identify and evaluate new inventions.
  • Conduct prior art searches.
  • Effectively manage outside counsel regarding the companys patent strategies.
  • Identify and monitor relevant IP activities in the field.
  • Perform diligence and provide legal opinions with respect to patentability, validity, and freedom to operate.
  • Support IP-related transactional work, including business development opportunities and other agreements.
  • Reviews IP aspects of technical manuscripts, posters, presentations, and other materials intended for publication.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in biological sciences, organic chemistry, or related field, with a Ph.D. preferred.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • J.D. and bar admission in good standing in at least one state for Patent Attorney position.
  • Patent Attorney: minimum of 4 years of experience in a law firm and/or in-house pharmaceutical or biotechnology company practicing patent law, including management of complex global IP portfolios for therapeutic molecules.
  • Patent Agent: minimum of 8 years of experience in a law firm and/or in-house pharmaceutical or biotechnology company prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications and managing complex global IP portfolios for therapeutic molecules.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills with high detail orientation.
  • Client service focus and ability to adapt and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

The attorney will advise on wide range of intellectual property matters, including patent preparation and prosecution, worldwide patent portfolio management, overall IP strategy, patentability, and freedom-to-operate analyses. The position reports directly to the Leader of Synthetic Molecules Patents US. The position is located at 50 Binney Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sanofi U.S. is only considering candidates who are currently legally eligible to work in the U.S. Company-paid relocation benefits are not offered for this position. Principal Accountabilities: * Prepare, file, and prosecute US, EPO, and foreign patent applications in chemical and pharmaceutical areas. * Interact with clients at all levels of the organization (including Research & Development, Project Management, Business Development, Franchise, Industrial Affairs) in the US and Europe to provide client counselling and proactively solicit invention disclosures. * Proactively counsel clients about IP strategy related to client's business. * Provide patentability evaluation of IP related to internal, collaborative, and external projects. * Initiate, defend, and manage post issuance patent proceedings such as post grant reviews, inter partes reviews, oppositions, and litigations. * Participate in due diligence and the drafting, reviewing, and negotiation of agreements covering intellectual property rights. * Conduct, direct, and analyze patent searches and render opinions on validity, non-infringement, and patent avoidance of third-party patents. * Review proposed research papers and other publications for any impact on patent strategies Qualifications: * A minimum of a Graduate degree (MS, PhD) in a chemical or biochemical science is required. PhD is preferred. * A minimum of 12 years of patent law experience gained in-house and/or in a law firm is required for this role * Registered US Patent Attorney is required * Member of at least one US State Bar is required * Extensive experience in handling complex pharmaceutical IP matters and counselling senior and executive level clients is required * Experience in managing patent litigation's, US post-grant proceedings, EP Oppositions, IP due diligence, agreement drafting is required * Orange Book listings, and patent term litigation is preferred * Able to independently handle preparation and global prosecution of patent applications * Ability to work in a team within an international professional network and interact with colleagues in other countries. * A highly motivated and performance driven person exhibiting initiative to contribute to the team in more ways than mere handling of assigned projects. * Fluent in English, familiarity with French and/or German would be an asset * Position may require up to 10% overall travel (domestic and international) Sanofi Inc. and its U.S. affiliates are Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employers committed to a culturally diverse workforce.
