Senior Park Ranger positions plan and oversee the daily operation of a resource-based, open space, or regional park; assign, train, mentor, and evaluate the work of subordinate Park Rangers and Park Ranger Aides, other park personnel, volunteers, and contractors; design interpretative programs on park's natural, cultural, and historic features; design and direct the preparation of exhibits and publications; perform first aide, CPR, and search and rescue; plan, monitor, and implement special events; serve as a liaison to advisory community groups, other City departments, other agencies, and the public regarding park services and improvements; develop and administer park maintenance; plan, coordinate, and supervise habitat restoration, revegetation, enhancement projects, including non-native plant removals; provide emergency assistance; enforce park policies and regulations; issue administrative, infractions, and misdemeanor citations; prepare correspondence and reports; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

4% effective 7/1/24 

2% effective 1/1/25 

5% effective 7/1/25

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

  • The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time, and/or limited, hourly vacancies.

  • The list established for these positions may be used to fill vacancies for open space, regional parks, community parks, and other areas as necessary.

  • Senior Park Ranger employees may work unusual shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Senior Park Ranger positions may include duties that involve hiking long distances and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds.

  • Senior Park Ranger employees must wear and maintain standard uniform apparel as prescribed.

  • Senior Park Ranger will receive a uniform allowance upon hire and annual uniform allowance every new fiscal year for all eligible employees on (July timeframe).

  • Senior Park Ranger employees MUST possess the following within six months from the date of hire: Completion of a valid California Penal Code 832 Powers of Arrest course (or equivalent, if out-of-state); and a valid CPR/First Aid Certificate.

  • In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Senior Park Ranger positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION:   Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 120 semester/180 quarter).

NOTE:

  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis.  One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.

EXPERIENCE:  Two years of full-time experience assisting in administrative, professional, technical, or investigative work in ONE of the following:

  • Resource management, protection, habitat restoration, and use of resource-based, open space, or regional parks.

  • Writing, presenting, or conducting educational programs, natural, historic, or cultural interpretive programs.

  • Enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations.

NOTES:

  • Experience maintaining park grounds is NOT qualifying.  

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Resource Management, Public Resource Protection, Park Management, Outdoor Recreation, Geography, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a closely related field may be substituted for lack of experience in writing, presenting, or conducting educational programs, natural, historic, or cultural interpretive programs.

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Experience supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate Park Rangers.

  • Natural resource management experience, including habitat and trail management.

  • Experience enforcing regulations and issuing citations.

  • Resource management experience in trail maintenance and/or habitat restoration.

  • Knowledge of regional, natural, and cultural history.

  • Park guide or tour leader.

  • Law enforcement or investigative work.

  • Archeological or historical preservation research work.

  • Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area.

  • Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

  • For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test result for alcohol, cannabis/marijuana, illegal drugs, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, or misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening or selection process, may constitute cause for disqualification or termination of employment.
