Hiring range for this position is $36,441.60 - $43,555.20 Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 12.

Must be able to work all Cabarrus County Park locations and a flexible work schedule to include days, evenings, weekends, overtime, and holidays.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs intermediate protective service work involving a variety of assignments at the County and school parks.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Parks Program Manager.  Daily guidance and direction is provided to part-time Park Rangers, Recreation Facility Operators, and Community Service Workers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Taking reservations for park facilities; patrolling the park to ensure patrons' safety and enjoyment; inspecting parks and school parks; ensuring the park equipment is maintained and that the park is clean; secures monies used in transactions and collected; preparing and maintaining files and records.

  • Enforces ordinances regulating use of County parks and recreation facilities and State fishing regulations.

  • Ensures park facilities and grounds are clean, sanitized and stocked with supplies.

  • Checks park grounds and recreation facilities for safety hazards.

  • Develops and implements nature and environmental programs.

  • Collects, audits and transfers cash receipts.

  • Assists with the capture and rehabilitation of injured wildlife; makes minor repairs to recreation facilities; administers first-aid for minor injuries.

  • Assists park visitors by explaining park features and the need for conservation.

  • Responsible for training and evaluating part-time Park Rangers and assists in hiring.

  • Prepares and presents park interpretive programs.

  • Submits work orders for park and school park repairs.

  • Assists in clean-up, set-up, or repair of facilities.

  • Maintains a clean and safe work location.

  • Prunes and trims trees, shrubs and bushes.  Operates chain saw and hand tools in performance of tasks.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the State laws and local ordinances governing park and recreational areas and of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common hand tools and power chain saw.  Ability to enforce rules and regulations in a firm and courteous manner; to follow oral and written directions; to prepare detailed reports; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, and the general public; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires graduation from high school and considerable experience in park operations and/or public contact work in a related field.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.  Advanced education in park management, natural resources, environmental education, biology or related field desired.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.  Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy.  Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is preferred.  Possession of current CPR, AED, and first aid certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
