Senior Packaging Engineer

IDEXX is seeking a Senior Packaging Engineer to join the Westbrook, Maine packaging team. This position will work directly with Marketing, Procurement, Distribution, New Product Development, across all our global locations. The ideal candidate will have experience designing packaging for medical equipment and consumables, as well as testing methodologies and EPR reporting.

What can you expect in this role:

• Plan and direct the design and development of product packaging.

• Develop packaging specifications and assist in package trial runs, manufacturing issue resolution, and validation efforts.

• Create package designs using cutting edge technology/materials to support innovation, sustainability, and development initiatives.

• Validate protective package designs by performing shipping tests using the in-house lab.

• Assist in specification development for the extended producer responsibility requirement for global reporting.

• Conduct and validate cold chain packaging by performing thermal shipping tests.

• Support existing businesses through packaging revisions, cost reduction projects, and packaging improvements.

• Coordinate cross-functionally with the marketing, distribution, creative, and others to ensure the IDEXX brand is represented as required through product packaging.

• Contribute as the SME with outside manufacturing and equipment suppliers as needed to ensure appropriate product protective packaging is used.

• Conduct root cause analysis when issues arise involving packaging across various company functional/regional units.

What you will need to succeed:

• 3+ years' experience and a bachelor's degree in packaging engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

• Demonstrated ability to interface with all levels of management.

• Strong project management skills

• Must have ability to communicate both verbally and in written form, including reports and concise, well-written technical documentation.

• Familiarity with rigid and flexible packaging, including rigid plastics, flexible films, resins, paperboard, corrugated, cushioning, thermoforming, and packaging equipment preferred.

• Familiarity with cold chain packaging.

• Familiarity with ISTA packaging tests and test equipment (drop tester, vibration table).

• Familiarity with small parcel shipping environment.

• Knowledge of printing/decorating processes (lithography, flexography).

• Knowledge of 2D and 3D ArtiosCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, CAPE and SAP.

• Experience working in a USDA/FDA regulated environment preferred.

Physical Demands:

• Extensive sitting, standing and computer use.

• May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 50 pounds.

• Will work in office, engineering lab, and industrial environments requiring appropriate PPE.

• Some travel may be required.
