Responsible for all aspects of food and employee safety, service, quality and costs related to the packaging operations. Assures organizational objectives are met at highest quality consistent with company and customer cost expectations. Manages a Packaging Engineer.


  • Work with Operations, Quality Assurance, Marketing and Sales teams to continuously develop and improve the packaging specifications system and process and execute changes orders as required by these teams.

  • Assist in sourcing packaging suppliers and evaluate their potential performance based on quality, prices, terms and delivery.

  • Administer and maintain specifications for all brand name and private label packaging items.

  • Communicate with packaging materials vendors on various key points of service, including soliciting specifications details and ensuring compliance with accepted specifications and advising on supplier performance.

  • Analyze drawings and other technical data to determine appropriate attributes of packaging materials to meet customer specifications and production capabilities. Assist in the budget process, review raw material packaging standards and budget preparation as needed by the Director.

  • Keep abreast of new developments in packaging innovations, and sources of supply through contacts with suppliers, trade publications and manufacturers.

  • Work with Director and suppliers on cost savings and synergy improvement programs such as alternative vendor and packaging material opportunities.


  • Must be able to physically perform the functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and interact with computers, telephone and other electronic media

  • Must possess visual acuity to document company records

  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds


  • BA degree in Management, Business, Packaging, Engineering or related field

  • 10 years progressively increasing responsibility in Packaging and Purchasing

  • Extensive experience in the Food Processing industry working with consumer packaged goods

Delta's Packaging engineers design, develop, and implement complete new product packaging solutions that exceed the expectations of Delta's customers. Delta's Packaging Engineering interns work under the guidance of experienced packaging engineers to support new product developments, quality improvements, customizations, and cost reductions. Principal Accountabilities: Principal accountabilities include: * Populating, and maintaining packaging attribute data within Delta's ERP/PLM system * Analyzing packaging problems, identifying root causes, and developing creative solutions to packaging related challenges * Applying company standards to ensure graphics, copy and compliance / regulatory related information is properly applied and designed into packaging components * Verifying and validating effectiveness of packaging designs by conducting packaging transit and environmental tests per ISTA standards. * Authoring and implementing Engineering Change Orders (ECO's) as needed and effectively communicating implications of packaging changes and requirements to all affected functional areas * Growing Delta's engineering body of knowledge by developing and documenting work instructions and standard operating procedures for packaging related components and processes. * Assisting in the creation of packaging drawings, samples and written analysis of proposed packaging designs for approval * Developing pallet stacking patterns, product packaging layouts and instructions for assembly Education and Experience/Skills: You should be in pursuit of a BS in Packaging Engineering or related engineering field, from an accredited four-year college or university. You need the ability to work on multiple projects and be able to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team. Exposure to packaging engineering fundamentals is preferred but not required.
