Job Description:

Thomson Reuters Tax & Accounting (TRTA) is seeking a Senior Oracle Database Engineer to join our Checkpoint technology team. Checkpoint is the market-leading online tax and accounting research product with authoritative and nationally respected content and productivity tools. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for designing and implementing Checkpoint database enhancements and troubleshooting and resolving database related defects. You will also be doing application support and development. Active interaction with internal customers, other developers, Quality Assurance, Business System Analysts, and Customer Support counterparts is an integral part of the role.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Database Engineering, Design and Standards

  • Define database design and infrastructure standards in conjunction with the architecture team, including supported DBMSs, features, and server configurations

  • Partner with specific development and business partners to assess database hardware, database design and configuration requirements. Recommend solutions that conform to supported standards

  • Develop and maintain standard solutions for database software installation and database creation

  • Develop and maintain standard solutions for database migrations, upgrades and technical refreshes

  • Develop and maintain processes, procedures and the necessary tools to regularly audit the database environment for conformance to implementation standards

Database Support

  • Provide occasional escalation support for front line operational support DBA team for production incidents that require application specific knowledge or investigation

  • Assume ownership of database related problems and pursue root cause analysis and problem resolution through coordinated interaction with database vendors and internal support teams

  • Define and implement database changes that require specific application knowledge or are using new technologies, approaches or techniques

  • Direct the execution of periodic audits for standards compliancy and backup consistency

  • Participate in initiatives to define, measure, and report on database quality and stability

Application development and support

  • Write and modify stored procedures using industry and company best practices

  • Provide input into the quality of development in the organization and promote best practices

  • Participate in project planning sessions to understand requirements, provide design options, and provide work breakdown estimates

  • Assist in Quality Assurance processes and customer issue resolution

Ongoing Education and Training

  • Learn and stay current on the features and functionality of Oracle database technology, focusing on technology to improve performance, availability, reliability, stability, and work efficiencies

  • Learn and stay current on the architectural standards supported by Thomson Reuters

Business Acumen and Strategy

  • Willingness and ability to gain broad knowledge on Thomson Reuters Professional products

  • Proactively generates relevant ideas for new and improved use of technology

  • Understands the impact of new projects and technical impacts to supported systems

  • Collaborates with peers, architects and managers to determine project strategy and how best to implement/support it

Qualifications, Knowledge, and

Skills:
  • Strong experience and working knowledge of Oracle 11g, and Oracle RAC

  • Practical experience and working knowledge of various data modelling tools

  • Experience working within a virtualized Linux (Red Hat / Oracle) / Solaris environment

  • Experience working with Oracle supporting resources, including meta-link, support forums, etc.

  • Must have a comprehensive understanding and experience working with various database backup/recovery procedures, tools, and methodologies

  • Experience with PostgreSQL is a plus

  • Demonstrated team player with great interpersonal skills, strong drive, excellent work ethics and strong commitment to team and organizational success

  • Possess a strong ability to quickly understand user requirements or issues and provide solutions that meet their needs

  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a high pressure, customer service oriented and team oriented collaborative environment

  • Demonstrated ability to plan effectively to complete time sensitive tasks and clearly document results while following standard processes and procedures

  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with peers, application developers, technical management, and business management.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Computer science degree preferred.

  • Advanced skills as hands-on Oracle DBA support engineer

These databases provide mission critical data processing services and it takes highly skilled DBA's to build and maintain these systems. To meet the challenges of our fast growing business products and services lines, we need to grow our DBA team. We're looking for exceptional DBA's who are interested in using the latest database technologies to deliver industry leading systems, with results that go directly to the bottom line. Thomson Reuters (TR) is the world's largest international multimedia company. The technology organization within TR is a centralized unit providing shared software and services to TR business units across the globe. We are looking to add a Senior Database Engineer to our SQL Support database team. This global team interacts directly with key technical groups, collaborating to implement change and provide support for major databases systems that deliver data to the critical, revenue generating applications that drive the TR business. These systems rely upon MS SQL and Sybase database software running on versions of Windows operating systems. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY Technology (70%) Database Support * Provide primary support for critical, complex production MS SQL databases * Troubleshoot, investigate and drive resolution of incidents * Work closely with internal technical teams during incident resolution and root cause analysis * Coordinate interaction with vendors, creating service requests and escalating as needed to ensure timely resolution * Provide problem management and resolution for repeat issues * Make recommendations and contribute to the design and development of long-term solutions * Respond to inquiries from business partners related to performance, application errors, storage capacity, etc. * Review and execute medium to low risk changes including DDL, database configuration changes, patching, and well defined, well documented upgrades * Participate in new system builds; create databases, schemas and deploy standard jobs and monitoring * Through review and solid handoffs, ensure system supportability prior to production utilization * Adhere to documented change and incident management policies * Use established Shared Services support processes and tools to document and track problem resolution * Develop technical documentation for use in future incident resolution * Provide support outside of normal office hours only on rare occasions (emergency and infrequent pre-planned occurrences) Ongoing Education and Training * Learn and stay current on the features and functionality of MS SQL databases, focusing on technology to improve performance, availability, reliability, stability and work efficiencies. * Learn and stay current on standard database solutions designed by the Systems Engineering Database group. Leadership and Communication (15%) * Translate highly technical solutions/problems into clear language useful to audiences at varying technical levels * Prepare high quality technical documentation, present it clearly to interested parties * Communicate in a professional manner when interacting across staff levels and internal/external customers * Mentor and coach database engineers * Research and develop team leadership skills.
