Overview

Waters Corporation is seeking a strong technical contributor to fill a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer position within the Systems Development Engineering Group.

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will work with Scientists and Mechanical Engineers involved in rapid prototyping of analytical instrumentation. This role is responsible for creating functional opto-mechanical designs for spectroscopic applications related to High Performance Liquid Chromatography. You will be part of a small multi-disciplinary team whose role is to develop proof-of-concept prototype instruments. These systems will be used to solve some of the world's most intractable analytical problems utilizing liquid chromatographic separations.

Responsibilities

  • Work with scientists and lead project engineers to develop, evaluate and qualify mechanical and optomechanical assemblies, components, materials, processes and/or processing equipment for incorporation into new product designs.

  • Analyze designs before and during development using analysis tools such as FEA, CFD and CAD.

  • Demonstrate feasibility of designs to fulfill prescribed requirements with test data and supplemental analysis to justify design approaches.

  • Provide technical analysis support and guidance to team members and other development groups to implement designs with proven feasibility into commercial products while ensuring conformance to company and customer requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum is a Bachelor's Degree in Optical or Mechanical Engineering (MSME preferred) or related field of study.

  • Minimum 5 years industry experience (BS) or 3 years industy experience (MS) in optomechanical engineering design pertaining to scientific instruments or medical device products.

  • Proficiency with 3D Solid Modeling (SolidWorks preferred or UG NX), Finite Element Analysis and Computation Fluid Dynamics.

  • Experience with a variety of analysis and evaluation tools such as data acquisition systems for temperature, pressure transducers, and optical measurement devices.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with superiors, peers, suppliers and customers.

  • Ability to function in a dynamic environment where project plans and priorities can change quickly.

  • Familiarity in HPLC, MEMS or microfluidics technology with interdisciplinary engineering and/or systems is desired.

  • Working knowledge of optics, ray tracing, and optical metrology is highly desired.

This individual's efforts will be of impact to a wide range of different scientists, from those expressing biopharmaceuticals under continuous manufacturing conditions to clinicians looking to make more informed decisions about personalized medicine. In this dynamic role, the candidate will become an integral part of an interdisciplinary R&D environment by taking on leadership roles in prototype evaluation, method development, and product commercialization. This position offers an excellent opportunity to grow professionally and scientifically as well as to work collaboratively with project team members from both materials science and marketing. Responsibilities * Research and develop novel sample preparation approaches for detecting, quantifying and characterizing biomolecules using improved strategies for protein digestion and peptide-level protein analysis. * Be a lead investigator for the evaluation of prototype consumables, including reagents, enzymes, sample preparation devices, and/or chromatographic columns. * Contribute to interdisciplinary research efforts by offering a detailed understanding of applications and method development. Provide feedback to other teams through hypothesis-driven proposals to improve upon state-of-the-art consumable technologies and assist engineering and material science groups on design of experiments and new prototypes. * Design and execute test strategies, prepare reports and provide internal presentations to summarize scientific findings. * Operate and maintain LC/LC-MS systems and general lab equipment while creating and maintaining records of test related activities. * Protect newly developed intellectual property by assisting in the preparation of invention disclosures and patent applications. * Lead and carry out product development activities to ensure that new products are appropriately designed for their intended use. * Work with marketing colleagues and other technical groups across Waters to define and successfully commercialize new products and to showcase them through publications and collaborations with thought leaders from academia and industry. * Attend and present at conferences and keep abreast of literature to support product commercialization, aid in customer education, and to be versed in current as well as emerging applications, methods and customer needs. Qualifications A successful candidate should have: * Degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry or related discipline. * BS with 10+ years of experience, Master's Degree with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 0-3 years of experience in developing methods for the analysis of biomolecules. * Advanced degree preferred. * Inventiveness and a keen interest in science. * Experience in developing sample preparation techniques for assaying biomolecules, including protein digestion, automation, peptide mapping and peptide MS/MS. * Well developed oral and written communication skills. * Proven track record of analyzing ability and learning agility. * Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment. * Proficiency in various types of separation techniques for biomolecules, including RPLC, SEC, IEX, and/or HIC chromatography. * Proficiency in mass spectrometry of biomolecules, including peptides and proteins. * Experience in method development and troubleshooting. * Demonstrated ability to publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and to give presentations at leading conferences. * An understanding of structural biology and enzymology is preferred.
