SMD is seeking a driven, collaborative Senior Optical Engineer to spearhead the research and development of optical imagers based around camera modules such as but not limited camera types of USB cameras, MIPI-CS2 cameras, and other embedded/machine vision cameras. In this pivotal role, the candidate will serve as a senior engineer, driving the research and development and the sustainment of optical camera imagers. The research and development will include designing novel optical camera systems of which their effort shall be in lens design, lens selection, camera testing, LED illumination design, and the selection of sensors. Central to these research and design responsibilities will be the innovation and creation of cutting-edge optical cameras for advanced handheld imaging systems, playing a key role in SMD's engagements across civilian and defense health projects.

The senior optical engineer will be self-sufficient and ensure that the optical camera designs align with SMD's engineering procedures for medical device development. Additionally, they should possess a deep understanding of system-level design principles. The engineer may also have additional responsibilities to engage in image processing and coding activities essential for effective system integration. This role demands a passion for innovation, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering excellence in optical engineering within the medical device domain.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with camera module vendors to identify and customize cameras that meet our requirements

  • Facilitate efficient and result-oriented engineering meetings.

  • Collaborate with teams to strategize, prioritize, and execute project tasks.

  • Utilize design principles and OpticStudio to craft precise lens assembly designs.

  • Employ Solidworks to engineer mechanical assemblies and components tailored to accommodate lens assemblies.

  • Prepare and disseminate detailed drawings for lens elements and mechanical structures.

  • Develop comprehensive work instructions for the meticulous testing of optical components and systems.

  • Oversee supply chains and vendor relationships for the procurement of optical components.

  • Work with 3rd party design services for lens design projects as necessary

  • Support quality assurance procedures and liaise with optical vendors to maintain stringent quality standards.

  • Engage in sustaining engineering activities to enhance the performance of optomechanical designs for medical devices in production.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, software developers, data scientists, and quality assurance.

  • Contribute to design documentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher

  • 5+ years of industry experience

  • 2+ years in a research position

  • Experience with configuring and operating UV-VIS spectrometers.

  • Additional knowledge of other optical metrology equipment a plus.

  • Advanced experience in lens design with such experience in:

  • OpticStudio

  • Lens assembly tolerancing

  • Optical system optimization

  • Hammer and merit function optimization

  • Glass catalog knowledge

  • Highly Knowledgeable of off-the-shelf (OTS) component selection and testing

  • Knowledge of component trade-offs

  • Selecting components while being conscious of cost reduction for higher volume production

  • Proficient understanding of cameras, imaging optics, and their integration.

  • Familiarity with either Python and/or Matlab

  • Working knowledge of C++ is a plus

  • Experience in working with a quality management system

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in biomedical engineering, optical sciences, applied physics or related field

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment producing high quality products on tight timelines.

  • 5+ years of experience in an optical engineering environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in OpticStudio and SolidWorks for optical and mechanical design.

  • Skilled in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, and C++ for data analysis and automation is a plus.

  • Experienced in mechanical tolerancing to ensure precision in engineering designs.

  • Proficient in creating and interpreting engineering drawings.

  • Adept in vendor management for sourcing and collaborating with suppliers.

  • Experienced in managing components and conducting thorough testing procedures.

  • Skilled in optical benchtop alignment and testing for accurate performance evaluation.

  • Capable of handling, cleaning, and organizing optical components meticulously.

  • Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in all tasks.

  • Possesses excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Highly motivated team player with strong cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are a must.

  • Exemplary interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and relationship-building.

  • Outstanding organizational skills to manage complex projects efficiently.

  • Proven ability in time management, consistently meeting deadlines.

  • Can thrive in high-paced and occasionally stressful environments.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for documentation and analysis.
