Portland General Electric is looking for an experienced individual with electrical engineering or operations experience to build out and support a new operator training simulator (OTS). This OTS is part of PGE's new Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), and the OTS Specialist should be a self-starter confident in their ability to create realistic training scenarios from either past or potential events. While working independently, you will also be part of the collaborative team ensuring Distribution System Operators are qualified to manage a variety of situations. PGE is charting a course to the clean energy future our customers desire and deserve. An upcoming milestone on this journey is the implementation of an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), which will enable us to monitor and control our distribution grid in real-time. PGE is among the first utilities in the U.S. to adopt this new technology and is implementing the first of a five-phase program that will integrate D-SCADA, Outage Management System (OMS), and other applications to optimize two-way power flows, support customer generation and smart home devices, micro-grids and more.

The ADMS will allow PGE to:

  • Increase visibility and control of the distribution network

  • Improve service reliability and reduce the number of sustained outages

  • Enable higher penetrations of Distributed Energy Resources

Initially, this role will be based at PGE's downtown Portland location. In early 2022, the System Control Center will move to PGE's Tualatin-based Integrated Operations Center, a new state-of-the-art facility, which centralizes key operations and functions in buildings designed for enhanced resilience against seismic, cyber and physical security risks.

The responsibilities could include:

  • As a recognized authority on the EMS and ADMS operator training simulator, this individual will work closely with Grid Technologies and Engineering teams to maintain functionality of both EMS and ADMS simulator systems.

  • Researches and gathers complex technical information for development of targeted scenarios.

    Designs simulator base cases to create specific training scenarios.

  • Designs and develops training scenarios and associated data sets. Provide support to training department regarding facilitation of training scenarios.

    Documents training activities and Student participation. Works closely with internal training department to develop and qualify training scenarios for NERC continuing Education Hours as applicable.

  • Provides leadership in support of overall Grid Operations Training plan and Training facilitator. This individual will be key to aligning the simulation training with overall Grid Operations Training Support Team. Provide training team support in trending industry training forums and meetings.

  • Completes required classroom and computer-based training, self-study and operational exercises to maintain NERC System Operator Certificate.

We are looking for someone that has a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, information Systems or relevant field of study or equivalent experience. And typically, eight or more years in operational occupations related to generation, transmission or distribution systems or a related field.

Must be able to obtain the NERC System Operator Certification, typically within six months of hire date.
