WSP is currently initiating a search for Senior NATM Tunnel Engineer for our Herndon, VA office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage design and construction of NATM tunnels and underground projects in the WSP Herndon, VA or Washington, DC offices.

  • Be responsible for the development and production of design packages, including, but not limited to drawings, specifications, geotechnical/tunnel memoranda, and reports for NATM tunnels and underground projects.

  • Serve as a senior tunnel engineer or construction manager on NATM Tunnel and underground projects.

  • Supervise junior staff engineers and support developing their capability.

  • Contribute to NATM tunnel and other underground project marketing and business development.

  • Perform peer review of NATM tunnels and other underground projects.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in a Civil Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering/Geology program, or similar, from an accredited School of Engineering or Geology. Advanced degree preferred.

  • 6+ years' experience in design and construction of NATM Tunnels and other underground projects.

  • Extensive design and/or construction experience in conventional tunneling using NATM in soft ground and hard rock.

  • Solid background in rock mechanics, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.

  • Proven experience in developing design packages, including, but not limited to contract drawings, specifications, geotechnical/tunnel memoranda, and reports.

  • US tunneling design and/or construction experience.

  • Excellent communication skills and working as a team player.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in numerical analysis such as FLAC, UDEC, PHASES2, PLAXIS 2D & 3D, MIDAS GTS, MODFLOW, etc is a plus.

  • Ground-structure-interaction modelling (FEM or similar)

  • Experience in large scale underground projects, urban tunneling, tunnel rehabilitation

  • Prior working experience in construction or working for a contractor
