The Microscopy and Image Analysis Laboratory (MIL), as part of the Medical School's Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) within the Office of Research, provides centralized access & expertise to major imaging instrumentation to investigators at the University of Michigan. The facility is currently comprised of three locations and houses eight major light microscopes, SEM, TEM, and infrastructure for light and electron microscopy sample preparation.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide expert-level pre-imaging consultations to guide and advise customers on project scope, experimental design, technical limitations, and image analysis goals (5%).

  • Train and assist users at an expert level on principles and operation of advanced light microscopy techniques including but not limited to: Intravital 2-photon microscopy, fluorescence life-time imaging, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, structured illumination microscopy, stimulated emission depletion microscopy, single-molecule total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, Yokogawa spinning disk with digital mirror device, Forster resonance energy transfer, or various light sheet microscopies (50%).

  • Be responsible for billing, maintenance, QA/QC calibrations, and data management on all instruments of responsibility (5%).

  • Perform advanced image analysis on a collaborative or fee for service basis (20%)

  • Train users on confocal and wide-field microscopes as needed (10%)

  • Work with MIL Director to prepare and provide educational and outreach materials to both internal and external customers (5%)

  • Perform occasional staff-assisted imaging (5%)

Required Qualifications*

  • M.S. in a quantitative science and 5-6 years of experience with at least four of the advanced light microscopy technologies listed above.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to work in a diverse customer based fee-for-service environment.

  • The applicant should be detail oriented, show a willingness to learn new skills, and work both independently and as a team player.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. in quantitative biological or optical sciences with publications that apply at least one of the above advanced technologies to answer biological questions.

  • Strong knowledge of fluorescence reporters and experience with diverse sample preparation and staining protocols for fluorescence imaging.

  • Demonstrated experience writing code to perform novel and/or automated image processing and/or analysis.

  • Hands on experience with optics or home-built systems.
