The Senior Medical Science Liaison (SMSL) will represent Company, and its investigational opioid molecule being evaluated to provide analgesia, while reducing abuse potential for chronic low-back pain in adult patients.

The Sr. MSL will function as a field-based extension of Company's Medical Affairs serving as a liaison between Key Opinion Leaders and Company in order to deliver comprehensive medical and scientific information in connection with Company's CNS products. The SMSL will act as a scientific expert, interacting on a peer-to-peer level with key opinion leaders (KOLs), researchers, payers and advocacy groups. The SMSL will deliver and discuss research data and new medical treatment concepts to key stakeholders affiliated with key institutions.

The SMSL (acting as a Player-Coach) will have all the functional responsibilities of the MSLs outlined above and will also provide coaching and mentoring for MSL skills development and overall performance in coordination with the MSL Program Director. The MSL Player Coach will be responsible for a smaller geography due to added coaching responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify KOLs and develop valuable long-term relationships by providing high-level scientific expertise and education on new advances in opioid pain management at the national, regional and local level

  • Facilitate opinion leader development and aid in the identification of areas of mutual interest and collaboration

  • Provide timely, accurate, specific and balanced responses to KOLs' requests for information

  • Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in the pain management therapeutic area. Identify, collect and communicate insights related to competitor medical information and physician practice trends.

  • Participate in scientific peer discussions including advisory panels, investigator meetings, and education programs and conventions

  • Work closely with Reimbursement and Managed Markets team to help educate the payer community on disease and treatment.

  • Have an understanding of and ability to operate within appropriate legal and regulatory guidelines.

  • Comply with company and industry guidelines in all activities and communication

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Specific aspects of the role include, but may not be limited to:

  • Work closely with the MSL Director, proactively communicate team needs, and establish a positive and collaborative team culture.

  • Define, clarify and manage the regional team priorities while promoting collaboration within the team and with customers.

  • Implement routine visits with their regional MSL reports and ensure that goals/performance/ development plans are reviewed on a quarterly basis.

  • Ensure that their team is well-trained, clinically prepared and scientifically up-to-date on all key subjects related to company products, clinical trials and medical strategy.

Qualifications

  • SR. MSL: PharmD, RPh, NP, MSN with strong pain management experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of MSL experience required, must have demonstrated management experience/responsibility

  • Pain management experience required

  • Some level of management or developmental experience required

  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate scientific/ medical information to the medical community

  • Demonstrated expertise in drug information communication; strong presentation skills.

  • Ability to build productive work relationships both internally and externally.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of FDA requirements and PhRMA guidelines.

  • Ability to travel up to 50%

  • Valid driver's license.

The Medical Science Liaison will serve as a key extension of the Medical Affairs team as a field-based clinical and medical expert responsible for communicating scientifically-based information and gaining insights in support of Flexion's products. The MSL will be a front line member of a field based team of scientists critical to establishing and maintaining excellent educational and research collaborations with KOLs, other investigators and key academic institutions. The MSL works under the departmental guidance of the MSL Area Director. The Role: Clinical and Scientific Intelligence: * Maintains and updates knowledge and expertise relevant to the therapeutic area that Flexion is focused in. * Attends therapeutically focused meetings and congresses to interact with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), as well as attends symposia, plenary sessions, etc. and shares insights with home office Medical Affairs team. * Facilitates deeper understanding of KOL's and clinical trial investigators, their unmet needs, roles, influence and their role in decision-making. Regional Trends and Scientific Exchange: * Maintains comprehensive knowledge of KOLs within territory. * Understands the interconnectivity of the key decision makers within and the challenges faced in providing and delivering optimal patient care within Osteoarthritis. * Collaboratively engages KOLs by region. Upon unsolicited request, delivers approved, fair-balanced disease state, clinical and scientific presentations to KOLs and payer audiences. Responsibilities: * Identify and develop professional peer-to-peer relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), managed market customers and other prominent healthcare providers. Opinion leader development includes appropriately engaging opinion leaders in research, as consultants and other activities. * Provide field-based medical and scientific information when responding to an unsolicited request for medication information regarding Flexion's products and related therapeutic areas. * Execute territory specific strategic medical plans for all marketed products as well as products in development across the portfolio of Flexion's products and therapies. * Collect intelligence through scientific and medical exchange with clinical investigators and medical experts and provide relevant information to Flexion in order to impact clinical strategies and improve medical insights. * Facilitate investigator-initiated research (IIR) concepts, including the support of concept development and submissions; for approved and funded IIR concepts, facilitate investigator and institutional contracting and oversee research milestone requirements to assure progression of protocol. * Deliver presentations to KOLs, P&T committee members, and other key decision makers. * Attend scientific meetings/congresses, provide scientific support, and report relevant findings of strategic interest to internal customers. * When appropriate, collaborate with clinical operations to facilitate the recruitment of potential sites for clinical trials and to assist in site location oversight and monitoring. * Be a strong team player who can effectively interface cross-functionally within Flexion. * Provide local medical support for certain marketing-led initiatives, such as consultant activities and advisory meetings as requested. * Professionally represent Flexion at all times and demonstrate Flexion's core values of focus, ingenuity, tenacity, transparency and fun. * Complete all internal reporting in an accurate and timely manner. * Adhere to all internal and external guidelines.
