Job Summary Performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory setting under the supervision of a physician. Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, documentation of vital signs, and assisting providers with patient exams.

Position may float to other sites/locations within the system. Excellent customer service/patient interaction skills. Requires basic computer including proficiency in the use of EMR systems. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Acts as mentor for the medical assistant staff.

Leads by example and fosters staff development. Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission, vision, goals, objectives, SPIRIT values, and patient care philosophy. With direction from Practice Manager, actively participates in Medical Assistant interviews, selection and retention activities; assists with training and onboarding of newly hired Medical Assistants.

Responsible for assessment of medical assistant competency and may serve as SimLab assistant as needed. May serve as a preceptor. Serves as Medconnect Superuser and assists in training other Medical Assistants on efficient use of the EMR to include accurate documentation of clinically related activities.

Demonstrates independent initiative and exercises critical thinking; communicates opportunities for improving the efficiency of medical office activities, and seeks resolution to identified barriers. Assists provider with patient preparation for examination, minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical team assuring optimal patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the work day.

Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed. Co-leads daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Screens all patients, regardless of visit type, for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns and potential fall risk.

Conducts surveillance for transitions of care, emergent care, or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing. Conducts motivational interviews that include screening and/or coaching on disease management ability, motivation to change, learning care needs, community outreach needs. Identifies potential behavioral health needs of patients using appropriate screening tools and notifies provider of findings.

As part of a High Reliability Organization, serves as Safety Coach. Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients, families and associates using established reporting protocols for MedStar Health and/or work location. Ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current/ unexpired, checking and maintaining emergency equipment, and all related tasks.

Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations they serve and engages the patient in self management support, goal setting, pre-visit planning, and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities. Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice, including but not limited to pregnancy testing, urinalysis, microbiology (streptococcal testing and cultures), tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and vision and hearing testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements). Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient#s medical record; performs required patient follow-up: to include pap smears, Pb levels, HIV, mammograms, and STD#s.

Collects and processes specimens, completes requisitions, and documents in log book or other applicable forms/records. Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy.

Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned, which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance, and manages drug and medical supply inventories.

Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients, determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols. Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medication. Under direct onsite physician supervision, may insert, remove and monitor foley catheter for procedures and prepare and administers oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular.

Provides Health coaching and follow up (such as diabetic coaching) in accordance with Physician instruction. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for physician approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization.

Ability to float to other sites/locations within the system to be able to perform all duties at multiple entities. Attends all scheduled meetings including, but not limited to, regular staff meetings and training classes for safety, infection control, OSHA,CLIA, CPR and others as required. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.

Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • 5 years CMA experience or 1 year in CMA supervisory role. 2 years in medical office or ambulatory care with experience working with medical records.

  • License/Certification/Registration

  • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) through American Association of Medical Assistants, or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) through American Medical Technologists, or certification/registration from a nationally recognized agency. CPR certification.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Clinical competency as verified annually. Basic computer skills preferred.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists physicians with patient preparation for examination and minor office procedures. Assists with the exam/procedures e.g. biopsy, culposcopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, etc.

  • Cleans, stocks, sterilizes equipment, and prepares clinical work area (e.g. exam rooms, lab, nurses station, patients restrooms) daily and/or as needed. Maintains equipment/environment and assists with medical supply requisition.

    Maintains logs and accounting of medical supplies. Discards outdated drugs/supplies routinely.

  • Communicates effectively with team members to ensure that they understand decisions which may affect them.Creates a connection between the team and the manager. Keeps manager informed of important information. Maintains and mentors a positive attitude and atmosphere through role modeling.

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards.

  • Cross-trained/Serves as backup for health team members, e.g. Receptionist, Technician Health Information, Coordinator Referral/Discharge, etc. as required.

  • Documents clinically related activities accurately in the medical record. Performs patient intake and discharge functions e.g. data gathering, using nursing protocols, and discharge instructions.

    Collects and processes specimens, complete requisitions, and documents in logbook or other applicable forms.

  • Follows-up on delegated tasks to ensure completion; supports team members; uncovers and resolves problems. Encourages teamwork and directs problem solving.Makes self accessible to team members. Monitors team progress.

  • Participates in meetings (staff, safety, infection control, OSHA, CPR, etc.) and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in ongoing continuing education and professional growth opportunities.

  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Performs required patient follow-up and tracking for Pb levels, HIC, mammograms, STD's, labs, diagnostics, and return appointments. Maintains log and documentation systems for same.

  • Performs selected patient screenings and waived laboratory testing e.g urinalysis, strep testing and cultures, TB skin testing, EKG, finger/heel sticks, and vision/hearing screenings.

    Collects and processes specimens, complete requisitions, and documents in logbook or other applicable forms.

  • Plans and prioritizes team tasks. Sets timelines for completion.

    Matches associates to tasks based on skills, interests, resources. Identifies the need for additional resources. Identifies potential roadblacks and pursues their resolution.

  • Under direct on-site physician supervision assists with returning patient phone calls including calling in prescription refills, giving information, etc.

  • Under direct on-site physician supervision, prepares and administers oral medications and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular methods (deltoid, gluteal, vastus lateralis sites only)
