The Sr. Mechanical Integration Design Engineer will be relied upon as a hands-on instrument packaging lead within in a fast-paced team that is developing Cepheid's next generation medical diagnostic instrument platforms, lab automation and production systems. This role works within a team comprised of electrical, mechanical, software and optical engineers to design and productize molecular diagnostic systems that will be commercialized as key products in Cepheid's portfolio. You will take proven designs and further integrate them for lower cost, higher reliability, and higher performance when manufactured at large scale, working as the central liaison between industrial design, product design, and manufacturing engineering - you will know the "what," the "how," and the "who" can make the team's design ideas reality on tight timelines.
Essential Job Responsibilities
High level product experience of implementing volume manufacturing techniques - injection molding, die casting, stamped metal parts, etc.
Identify and execute hands-on work with 3rd-party vendors to implement mechanical fabrication.
Identify and lead team execution upon Valve Added Value Engineering (VAVE) activities for next-generation designs includes intrinsic design ideals and product assembly techniques.
Drive redesigns that address the determined root-cause and collaborate/perform/lead with other team members in the verification, validation and Change Order submission and implementation of the redesigns.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
A minimum 10 years of experience in proven, hands-on mechanical design/integration for commercial instrumentation/consumer products.
Proven product development/commercialization experience within a risk-control framework.
Knowledge in design methods that enable production of complex, integrated instrumentation for high-volume manufacture at low cost.
Fast learner, self-motivated, willing to work outside the job description.
Proficient in SolidWorks 2010 and PDM Workgroup, with a working knowledge of advance analysis tools such as FEA, reliability, CFD and tolerance.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge and skills:
Expert at designing production fixtures/assembly schemes for high-quality, low-cost manufacture.
Demonstrated analytical/experimental problem-solving skills to understand hardware, software, reagents and consumables issues and to be able to quickly analyze and resolve system inter-operability problems.
Demonstrated rigorous process discipline and documentation practices to assure functionality, safety, reliability and quality of the product.
Can perform machining & similar fabrication techniques.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated technical writing skills.
Medical equipment product development/support experience.
Experience designing successful integrated solutions for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection.
CNC machining experience.
Ability to lift 25 lbs.
Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks.
