Waters Corporation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to become a key member of our Instrument Development Group. In this role, the individual will drive new product innovation in the development of next generation Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry instruments and systems.

Working in a multi-disciplinary environment where high precision mechanical design intersects with physics, electronics, firmware, software and chemistry, the individual will be responsible for multiple aspects of mechanical design, analysis and test of subsystems and complete instruments from concept through volume production.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and create detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top level instruments from concept through production

  • Develop and review design concepts, drawings, bills of material, and assembly processes

  • Conduct detailed engineering analysis and test of components, subassemblies, and instruments to verify design and specification goals

  • Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs

  • Lead in prototype build and preproduction activities

  • Develop, design and implement equipment, tooling, fixturing, and processes to achieve production requirements for safety, delivery and cost

  • Provide assignments and technical mentoring to junior level Engineers, Designers, and Technicians

  • Broadly utilize DFM (Design For Manufacture) methods and GD&T

  • Prepare, drive and present design and drawing reviews

  • Work closely with NPI (New Product Introduction) to ensure smooth transition of design into volume manufacturing

Qualifications

Education:

  • BS Mechanical Engineering

  • MS Mechanical Engineering is preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years industry experience in design and analysis of precision mechanical/electromechanical components/assemblies for volume production

Knowledge, Skills Required:

  • Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost

  • Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Solidworks or UGNX)

  • Proficiency conducting Finite Element Analysis (CFD and experience with ANSYS considered a plus)

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer

  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009 as well as industry drafting standards

  • Knowledge of injection molded plastics design desirable

  • Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology

  • Experience processing ECO's, practicing organized revision control using a Product Data Management tool (PDM - SAP preferred)

  • Fluency in English - written and spoken

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with superiors, peers, suppliers and customers

Working in an interdisciplinary environment, you will be responsible for multiple aspects of mechanical design, fabrication, and assembly of released products. Responsibilities * Provide engineers with multiple 3D CAD models of concepts to address problems with released products. * Work with engineers and technicians to develop and evaluate the feasibility of designs. * Redesign existing products to reduce cost, increase manufacturability and reliability using DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology. * Analyze and apportion tolerances on parts in a way that satisfies the design needs while maintaining manufacturability. * Obtain parts from various sources to construct prototype components and assemblies for subsequent design analysis and verification. * Revise all related 2D drawings associated with any design changes that are made. * Perform design and drawing reviews to obtain feedback from the technical community. * Prepare and submit ECRs in collaboration with the responsible engineer. Qualifications * Minimum of a High School Diploma. Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study strongly preferred. * Minimum 5 years industry experience in mechanical / electromechanical design relating to scientific instruments or medical devices. * Strong 3D CAD solid modeling capability and an understanding of mechanical design principles are essential requirements. * Experience required in sheet metal design and fabrication, casting design, molded part design, the specification of surface finishes, and machining and manufacturing processes. * Fluency with parameterized 3D Solid Modeling (UG NX preferred or SolidWorks) * Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with superiors, peers, customers, and suppliers. * Utilize and understand industry drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5M-1994/ASME Y14.5-2009.
