Job Description

What will you do?

  • Design, prototype, and validate new products.

  • Perform multiple iterations and present trade studies to cross-functional audiences, including Project Management, Product Management, R&D Chemists, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain.

  • Apply knowledge of business practices, methodologies, and/or principles in the execution of short-term (1-2 years) functional deliverables or results.

  • Use 3D CAD (CREO) to perform mechanical design, modeling, and detailing of parts, assemblies, and drawings.

  • Coordinate with internal and external resources to produce physical prototypes

  • Coordinate with Project Manager to develop and execute a detailed schedule of mechanical activities that align with the overall project milestones.

  • Coordinate with vendors to optimize Design for Manufacturability (DFM).

  • Direct activities of support personnel to order parts, assemble breadboards, and assemble prototypes for testing.

  • Write and release Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for engineering drawings and Bills of Material (BOMs)

  • Assist in the transfer of products to Manufacturing, including documentation, training, and test fixtures.

How will you get here?

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent, with 5+ years related work experience

  • Strong knowledge of a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.

  • Experience performing ECOs and creating/updating BOMs; SAP and Oracle are a plus.

  • High proficiency using 3D CAD software to manage large assemblies; CREO/Windchill is a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of ANSI drafting standards and GD&T

  • Excellent communication skills; must be able to clearly communicate technical content to peers and management, support conclusions and recommendations with calculations, test data, industry literature, etc.

  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to understand system interfaces and be able to quickly analyze, troubleshoot, and determine root cause of issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or equivalent, with 3 years related work experience.

  • Experience with fluidic devices (e.g. pumps, transducers, tubing, fittings) in the medical device or scientific instrument industry

  • Experience using CREO for sheet metal and molded plastics design

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing thermoplastic components, (machined and injection molded), including PEEK, PTFE, UHMW, and others.

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing sheet metal

  • Demonstrated success in managing projects

  • Experience developing under ISO 9001 quality management systems

  • Proficiency using common machine shop power tools (e.g. mill, lathe, drill-press).

We need your valuable broad spectrum of experience as part of Cepheid's hardware sustaining engineering team. The primary responsibilities will be supporting our current platforms, improving, and implementing product & process improvements within our operations and integrating new solutions into the production environment. This role will interface with all levels of the company and collaborates with engineering, SW, marketing, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, regulatory, service, and contract manufacturer as well as other cross-functional teams. This role also manages testing and qualifying of opto-electromechanical systems to verify they meet design requirements and industry standards. The individual is responsible for the quality of new hardware product designs. Most importantly, the ME exhibits the desire and ability to collaborate and excel in teamwork and communication, be able to work independently with minimum guidance. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provide high quality technical support to internal and external customers. * Requires in-depth knowledge and experience of design approaches and design input requirement. Independently research solutions, troubleshoot and resolve complex engineering problems by analyzing existing product issues and performance. Analyzes data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results. * Applies multiple engineering disciplines to plan, organize and conduct technical projects within design, fabrication, modification and evaluation of new or enhanced hardware products or systems. Projects may involve exploration of products and/or process problems, definition and selection of new concepts and approaches, origination or modification of material, component and process specifications and requirements. * Knowledge of manufacturing processes (including soft and hard tooling, machining, injection molding, wire EDM, MIM, electro polish, brazing, heat treatment). * Knowledge of electrical systems and apparatus, such as electric motors, sensors, LED, machinery controls, PCBA, cable harness, touch screen, LCD, battery, printer, and scanner. * Perform DFM and DFMEA reviews within electronic design group, with CM and suppliers. * Create ECO, and released documentation in Agile. Document findings in detail report, and present findings to cross functional Core team. * Liaise with Operations to support internal test equipment and programs to ensure the continuity of product flow and quality. * Coordinate sustaining engineering activities with engineering contractors. Provide statement of work, direct contractor activity and monitor results. * Review vendor and contract manufacturer capability to support product & process improvement. * Provide engineering technical support to the field. * All other duties as assigned.
