Microsoft Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (CHIE) is the team behind Microsoft's expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft's "Intelligent Cloud" mission. CHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

To achieve this goal, the Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for Senior Mechanical Engineers with a passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the team.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • Proficient at PTC Creo and PDMLink software.

  • Experience in sheet metal design, Printed Circuit Assembly (PCA) mechanical design, plastic design.

  • Experience with prototyping and high volume manufacturing methods, managing Original Design Manufaturing (ODMs) and experience with thermal systems design.

  • Experience in cross-discipline design process working with other hardware members develop optimized solutions from chip to the rack level

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in the electronics design industry with a track record of production designs.

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Experience in structural design and analysis tools

  • Experience in tolerance analysis and first article analysis

  • Experience in liquid cooling and mixed cooling designs

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.

  • Responsible for design of mechanical assemblies centering around computer servers and racks using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to relay these designs

  • Responsible for directing the mechanical design efforts of partners and contract manufacturers.

  • End-to-end Ownership of designs

  • Responsible for interfacing with multi-discipline teams in development of server hardware

  • Presentation of information to partner teams and management

  • Responsible for carrying out testing on mechanical components

  • Working with high volume manufacturing to produce components at scale
