Merrick & Company's Nuclear Services & Technology team provides full service nuclear design solutions to the federal government (DOE, NNSA, and NIST), nuclear research, and nuclear medicine. Merrick is seeking a highly motivated, team oriented Mechanical Engineer to support our operations in our Los Alamos, NM, Oak Ridge, TN, or Aiken, SC office. Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.

Job Description

The successful candidate will design HVAC and Plumbing/Piping system for a variety of facility projects. Tasks include developing design calculations, process flow diagrams, sequences of operation, equipment selection and layout, ductwork and piping sizing and layout, support of project proposals, interdisciplinary coordination and participating of QA/QC process. Part time efforts will be devoted to site inspection and construction administration. This position is primarily a leadership role and will be part of a design team environment.


  • Degree Requirements: Bachelor of Sciences in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Accredited Program is required.

  • Minimum of twelve (12) years related experience.

  • Candidate must have their Professional Engineering (PE) license in SC, TN or NM or able to receive reciprocity within 6 months.

  • Must understand the importance of Business Development, project management for A-E firms, managing to fee and demonstrate skills in a multi-discipline teams.

  • Position requires the ability to manage other engineers and designers.

  • Experience interfacing with client contacts.

  • Strong experience with thermal load calculation and energy modeling for mechanical systems.

  • Strong experience in calculating and sizing of mechanical equipment including AHUs, fans and pumps.

  • Strong experience in sizing and laying out ductwork and hydronic piping systems.

  • Must be familiar with AutoCAD

  • Must have experience Revit building information modeling software.

  • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.


  • Must be willing to work in a design team environment, including directing the work of junior engineers and designers, and delegating work as required as well as take design direction from senior-level engineers

  • Interdisciplinary coordination

You will be preparing technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment and supporting systems. <br><br> The ideal candidate will have solid experience in HVAC mechanical system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including ventilation and instrument diagrams (V&amp;IDs) and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. Experience in procurement of packaged equipment is a plus.?</p><p>Responsibilities</p><p>Collect the HVAC, safety, and other data and requirements for HVAC and/or other support systems.</p><p>Design the system and specify the equipment to meet the applicable design requirements.</p><p>Procure the equipment in accordance with applicable QA requirements.</p><p>Coordinate with the engineering group and other disciplines in developing the detailed system design and specifying equipment in a team environment.</p><p>Prepare reports and studies in resolving open technical issues related to the process systems.</p><p>Develop and revise ventilation and instrument diagrams, formal calculations, and equipment datasheets and specifications in completing the detailed design for the system, including equipment selection.</p><p>Support the associated safety analyses and hazards evaluations.</p><p>In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the &quot;face&quot; of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.? ?</p><p>Qualifications and Skills</p><p>Basic Qualifications</p><p>Grade 25 - BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with six (6) year of related experience.</p><p>Grade 26 - BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with nine (9) years of related experience.</p><p>Related experience includes, but is not limited to, V&amp;IDs, calculations, and specifications for Mechanical/HVAC systems and equipment on power plants, refineries or chemical process facilities.?</p><p>Must be a United States citizen.</p><p>Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education.</p><p>Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to work site.</p><p>Minimum Qualifications</p><p>Knowledge of corporate, industry, and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.</p><p>Preferred Qualifications</p><p>Experience working with vendors on procurement of equipment.</p><p>Experience in CGD and/or Environmental Equipment Qualification is desirable but not required.</p><p>Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering examination.</p><p>Experience with Trane TRACE™ 700 and VariTrane™ Duct Designer software</p><p>Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel)</p><br> SOC Support Services Oak Ridge TN
