The Facilities Business Line provides building-focused architectural and engineering services to a variety of commercial, industrial, and institutional clients. We provide analysis, evaluation, plans, and design for facility projects that involve rehabilitation, expansion, and new construction. We provide services in mechanical/HVAC, electrical/lighting, structural, security, data and voice communications, energy management, audio visual, civil/utility, site development, and architectural disciplines.

We are seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer in our Raleigh, NC office to support a variety of projects to include an array of building types serving both private and public sector clientele from market sectors including Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical Device Manufacturers, Food and Beverage, Transportation, Higher Education, and Industrial Manufacturing.

As a Licensed Professional Engineer, you will be responsible for designing Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems such as VAV systems, CAV systems, VRF systems, Central Utility Plants, Hydronic systems such as condenser water, chilled water, and space heating hot water systems; and low-and high-pressure steam systems. Custom air handling equipment design experience serving cGMP areas is desired. Various other utility design is desired, including industrial dust collection, Plumbing, process and lab waste, Compressed Air, vacuum, etc. Work also involves field surveys of mechanical systems.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation of Construction Drawings, including floor plans, schedules, P&ID's, details, and specifications for the Mechanical, Piping, Plumbing, and Fire Protection disciplines. Drawings are created in Revit and AutoCAD.

  • Performing site survey of existing system conditions for interface of new designs with existing HVAC and control systems.

  • Design of mechanical systems including air side and water side design, central plant, variable air volume and constant air volume systems, small and large HVAC systems, VRF systems, and dehumidification systems. Chilled water, Steam, Condensate, Compressed Air, Heating Hot Water, Clean Steam, etc.

  • Participate in meetings with clients and project teams.

  • Deliver projects in compliance with client and company quality control procedures and engineering guidelines.

  • Participate on project teams in an active production role.

  • Preparation of project specifications with oversight from the project Engineer.

  • Preparation of mechanical cost estimates

  • Daily interaction and collaboration on cross-functional teams across multiple disciplines.

  • Coordination and verification of as-built drawings.

  • Perform quality work that promotes client retention.

Hybrid 3 Days/wk in-office minimum

Minimum Qualifications

  • A BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.

  • P.E. is required.

  • Must have 10+ years' experience and the ability to independently design the following HVAC systems for both renovated and new facilities: Hydronic and steam boiler plants, chiller plants, Custom Air Handling systems, VAV and CAV terminal unit systems, ductwork distribution systems, and control systems including DDC, BMS, PLC, and SCADA

  • Must have experience using energy modeling and heat load software to perform effective energy use analyses and heat load calculations.

  • Must have strong understanding and working knowledge of psychrometrics.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of mechanical building codes, energy codes, and construction standards.

  • Must have a strong understanding of Controls Systems, controls design, and operation, including Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's) and Sequences of Operation.

  • Must command excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Interpersonal skills associated with client interactions is required.

  • Project Management experience is a plus but not required.

  • REVIT experience with MEP Packages and BIM360 is preferred.

  • AutoCAD experience is preferred.

  • Strong Plumbing and Fire Protection experience is preferred.

  • P&ID's, Industrial Dust Collection, Compressed air, and clean utilities experience preferred.

  • Ability to mentor and lead junior engineering staff is required.
