Project Overview

The UPF project requires all employees to report on-site to receive any training, equipment, badging, and site access necessary to support remotely. This could require an initial Business Trip for up to 30 days.

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel's government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

UPF will be be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy's largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration's largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.

The UPF project works on a 4-10 schedule. Start times are flexible but the typical standard workweek is: Monday

  • Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.

Position Summary

This position works as part of the Mechanical Engineering team designing the plant systems, preparing technical reports and studies, design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements including nuclear safety requirements. This position will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering and construction disciplines and the client in the development of the design.

Responsibilities

  • The primary role of the Senior Mechanical Engineer is to plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work for a global business unit usually in one discipline in a project or staff group.

  • Perform work in the field including but not limited system walk-downs, inspections, troubleshooting, non-conformance dispositions, and processing field change requests

  • Must have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems.

  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.

  • Perform work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools.

  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university or college with 9 years of related experience. In lieu of degree, 15 years of related experience is required.

  • Related experience includes, but is not limited to, P&IDs, calculations, and specifications for Mechanical systems and equipment on power plants, refineries or chemical process facilities.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite.

  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and a background check for DOE security clearance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of ASME, B31.3, DOE, OSHA, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, AWS, Boiler Pressure Code (Section 8), etc.

  • Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics.

  • Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement

  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering work processes, procedures, and specifications. Proven leadership experience.

  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.

  • Related experience includes, but is not limited to, P&IDs, calculations, and specifications for Mechanical systems and equipment on power plants, refineries or chemical process facilities.

  • Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineers license in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering.

  • Previous UPF experience.

  • Experience in Material Science, Welding, Corrosion, Coatings

  • Experience in CGD and/or Environmental Equipment Qualification is desirable but not required.

  • Previous start-up Experience.

  • Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards and relevant CAD, CAE, and Bechtel standard computer applications e.g. INSPEC.

  • Experience with system design and deliverables e.g. P&ID, Line Designation Tables, Design Pressure Design Temperature, Equipment List, Calculations.
