Qualifications

Position Summary: The Senior Mechanical Development Engineer will provide new technology system designs and equipment for the development of ironmaking and melting technologies and processes. Commercialize and implement those new technologies into the DR plants.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Senior engineers act as discipline leads providing technical support for various projects and initiatives. Senior engineers will not have direct reports but will assign work to other engineers and designers as required.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, and implementation of mechanical systems and proprietary equipment for assigned New Technology Notice (NTN) activities.

  • Perform design and mechanical analyses through Mechanical Engineering calculations and practices.

  • Sketch conceptual designs, transfer ideas to the designers and engineers for development of mechanical drawings for NTNs.

  • Develop new technology designs and incorporate into larger systems.

  • Design detailed test plans, equipment designs, test procedures, and evaluation methods as required for assigned RTD activities.

  • Provide direction, technical support, and mentorship for designers and engineers.

  • Check drawings and drafting for adherence to basic and detailed designs for NTNs.

  • Develop and write Requisitions, Specifications, Quality Documents, and other technical documents as required to carry out RTD tasks and functions.

  • Support purchasing with technical review of vendor submittals and on-site inspection of system equipment as required.

  • Analyze designed and vendor supplied equipment for adherence to engineering specifications, required codes and standards, and project requirements.

  • Document RTD activities through the issuance of the applicable RTD reports (NTNs).

  • Prepare RTD technical and /or marketing papers for delivery to industry via conferences, publications, etc.

  • Prepare RTD related presentation materials and give presentations to prospective clients, consultants, partners, etc.

  • Work as a teammate with all company departments and employees in all assignments. Work toward building consensus on all assignments by finding solutions which meet the best interests of all parties involved.

  • Travel on business trips and/or field assignments as required to carry out departmental, project, and corporate tasks and functions.

  • Provide technical advisory services and collect data to validate new technology systems and/or equipment during plant start-ups.

Skills/Abilities:

Required:

  • Excellent base of mechanical engineering technical skills, knowledge of processes, and the application of sound engineering practices.

  • Utilize mechanical engineering principles for complex problem solving and design.

  • Basic understanding of materials, material selection, and their use in mechanical equipment design.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office Products Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

  • Basic use of Autodesk products or equivalent software.

  • Coordinate design schedules with designers, engineers, and other departments.

  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of direct reduction, ironmaking, and steelmaking processes.

  • Piping and ductwork design and stress analysis including hangers, supports, and thermal expansion.

  • Specifying, layout, and design of mechanical systems: i.e. dust collection, material handling, etc.

  • Specifying, layout, and design of mechanical equipment: i.e. pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors, vessels, etc.

  • Knowledge and understanding of ASME Codes and Standards, specifically ASME Section VIII and IX.

  • Knowledge and understanding of fabrication, welding, and manufacturing practices.

  • Multi-task while meeting schedule and deliverable deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical or other Mechanical/Materials based Engineering discipline Degree.

  • Minimum 10 years' experience in an industrial or technical environment, preferably related to the steel industry.

Travel Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Up to 25% International and Domestic based upon project demands and periodically more during specific project stages.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer

  • Must be physically able to move around inside and outside of the facility including climbing stairs.

  • Able to reach above shoulders and to lift 20 lb.
