Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in new and existing product development to join our team in Lincolnton, NC. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and developing products and components, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, utilizing CAD software, and staying updated on industry trends and technologies.

This position will report to the Engineering Manager. · Product Design: Conceptualize, design, and develop assemblies or components according to project requirements, considering factors such as functionality, aesthetics, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. · CAD Modeling: Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) to create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of parts and assemblies. · Prototyping:

Oversee the prototyping process, including selecting appropriate materials, to validate designs for fit, form, and function. · Material Selection: Evaluate and select suitable metal or plastic materials based on performance requirements, environmental factors, and cost considerations. · Design Optimization: Continuously improve designs for efficiency, performance, and cost reduction through manufacturing feedback, customer end use, and engineering analysis. · Manufacturability:

Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for production processes such as machining, shearing, welding, cutting, forming, and bending. · Documentation: Prepare and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including technical drawings, specifications, BOM’s and engineering change records. · Cross-functional Collaboration : Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including Operations, Fabrication, Assembly, Sales, Marketing and Sourcing teams to achieve project goals and deadlines. · Research and Innovation: Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in industry specific products, and incorporate innovative solutions into product development processes.

Essential Functions: Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following: Essential Work Functions: · Use your innovation and creative thinking skills and experience to transform existing outdated products into market leading world class products. · Lead design improvements of existing products or develop new products from concept to production. · Work closely with fabrication and assembly teams to improve existing designs and manufacturing processes. · Manage engineering changes – Create/update SolidWorks parts or assemblies.

Create/update/release 2D drawings. Use PDM/PLM software to manage revisions and data releases. Create and update engineering and production BOM’s (bills of materials) · Apply working knowledge of various manufacturing, assembly, secondary operations and finishing processes (welding, machining, casting, forging, heat treatment, anodizing, media blasting, powder coat, etc.) · Use problem-solving techniques related to design/technical issues such as root cause analysis, corrective actions, and design validation. · Work with a strong sense of urgency and purpose Requirements: What you will bring to UCS: · B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent · 7 years of experience in product design and development (preferably consumer goods) from concept to production · Excellent analytical skills, problem-solving skills and attention to detail. · Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work in cross-functional teams. · Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously. · Quality improvement mindset – Make products better with design improvements, material changes, fabrication, or assembly process changes · Innovation mindset – Understand market trends, end user requirements, and competitive product benchmarks to develop market leading products. · Experience with design of metal fabricated products using sheet metal, tubing, bar, plates, and weldments. · Powdered metal and die castings design experience and material selection a plus · Plastics technology, manufacturing processes, material selection and design for injection molding a plus · Familiarity with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), structural analysis (FEA/CAE) PPAP, DVP&R, DFMEA, QMS, and Quality Control Plans a plus · Familiarity with sports strength equipment, track & field equipment and gymnastics equipment a plus
