The Position

The Senior Material Handler contributes to producing reliable products and supplies with effective operations in an empowered organization. As part of a dynamic team, the Senior Materials Handler performs an important role in accomplishing our global logistics goals by ensuring the accurate availability and flow of materials and finished goods for our organization, manufacturing departments, and customers.

The responsibilities include performing complex tasks in a regulated environment, such as operating powered industrial vehicles, operating automated equipment, receiving and conveying materials, warehousing activities, inventory management, and shipping operations.

With a Lean mindset and operating in a state-of-the-art facility, you, the Senior Material Handler, is responsible for sharing best practices, training highly skilled team members, and working on assignments that require technical knowledge, good judgment, and initiative to support the organization's leadership team and business goals by identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of workflow procedures.

Your Job Responsibilities:

Production (30%):

  • Performs daily assigned standard work according to the departmental's governing processes (i.e., GSP's, OPs, QPs, or SOPs)

  • Ensures and maintains an orderly flow of materials from the warehouse to offsite locations and internal and external customers. Interacts with various departments to address issues related to inventory control and order processing.

  • Proactively supports the production operation teams during process deviations making materials available to reduce and eliminate downtime.

  • Verification, troubleshooting, root-causing, and reconciliation of inventory discrepancies in adherence to inventory control processes (TECO, Cycle counts, etc.), establishing and implementing preventive measures to reduce downtime.

  • Provides support to non-operations stakeholders with their good receipts, allocation, movements, and shipments.

  • Operates automated systems/equipment and sequences of operation, including Equipment setup, operation, and cleaning; Monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment.

  • Supports leadership to oversee the activities related to the receipt, storage, disbursement, and accountability of packaging, raw material intermediates, parts, and miscellaneous supplies.

  • Partners with and supports leadership on daily end-of-shift reports/pass-downs to provide data inputs, share best practices, and communicate effectively with the team. Ensures proper communication and synergies between shifts and teams. Leads end-of-shift pass-downs, as needed.

  • Participates in Tier Meetings presenting specific data and relevant updates from the functional area of responsibility. Leads Tier Meetings, as needed.

  • Effective operation of powered industrial vehicles in a safe and compliant manner.

  • Required to handle or manage hazardous materials.

Continuous Improvement (25%):

  • Organize and maintain logistics areas according to 6S principles. Assist in 6S audits and is required to close action items as needed.

  • Assist in the 6S audit program as needed.

  • Identifies gaps and participates in cross-functional process improvements and continuous improvement initiatives sharing technical expertise of the area and utilizing Lean principles and tools.

  • Collaborates internally and cross-functionally to promote, identify and implement Lean initiatives.

Teamwork and Collaboration (25%):

  • Proactively collaborate with peers in other shifts/functions to achieve or exceed targets.

  • Support the leaders to maintain and cultivate the organization's culture. Collaborate with the team and leaders to achieve departmental goals.

  • Communicates outside the department with manufacturing and associated organizations.

  • Partnering with internal and external functions to address escalations in a timely and effective manner.

Quality and Safety (20%)

  • Maintain the Right to Operate and ensure that all processes are understood and performed safely and healthily; Address and escalate any potentially unsafe hazards.

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all procedures and instructions related to the proper receipt, quarantine, storage, and disbursement of materials as it relates to FDA, OSHA, FAA, QSR, ISO, Good Manufacturing Practices, manufacturing exception events (MEEs), and other Roche policies and procedures.

  • Audit readiness (OSHA, FAA, FDA, etc.); Ensures completion of critical and time-sensitive actions and strategic department initiatives in preparation for internal/external audits and inspections.

  • Timely reporting of safety hazards, incidents, and near misses. Assisting leadership with investigations as needed.

  • Completes all assigned training. Responsible for maintaining 95% or above training compliance.

  • Qualified to provide function-specific training following internal training requirements.

Who you are?

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED required

  • Associates Degree preferred

  • 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a GMP environment

  • 2 years of experience operating power industrial vehicles.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English

  • Strong communication skills - written and verbal

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Demonstrated experience in 4 of the following logistics functional areas. i.e., Receiving, Shipping, Material Conveyance, Run Automated equipment, Replenishment/Putaway, and Finished Goods Packing.

  • Ability to be flexible and agile in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and high-volume environment.

  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.

  • Proficient with Google products (gMail, gSheets, gDoc, etc)

  • Proficient in SAP, quality, and manufacturing support systems.

  • Demonstrated experience with Lean / Continuous Improvement

  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams

  • Self-motivated with a high degree of initiative and ability to work autonomously.

  • Ability to train and influence others.

  • Ability to have prompt, regular and reliable worksite attendance.

Physical conditions and PPE requirements:

  • Required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, bend, and crouch for a combined 4 or more hours per day.

  • Required to push, pull, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Repetitive, consistent movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers.

  • Required to have good near visual acuity to perform activities throughout the processes in the assigned area.

  • Must be able to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts and ladders; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls and machinery; and to wear and work in personnel protective equipment.

  • This is an essential position supporting the organizational goals requiring attendance on weekends, holidays, and during an emergency or exceptional conditions.

Production 30% - Inventory is one of the most time-consuming

CI 25% - Improvement initiatives and promoting Lean through expertise

Teamwork and Collaboration 25% - Address escalations

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $49,400 - $91,800 USD Annual of hiring range. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
