Modern Hydrogen has an immediate opening for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer to develop our Design for Manufacturability / Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) competencies. You will be a key member of our Product Development team, interfacing closely with internal technical teams. You will support part production, design, fabrication, and assembly of Modern Hydrogen's commercial products.

This is an onsite role. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will be required to work on-site in our facility in Woodinville, WA 4+ days per week and attend quarterly company events in the Seattle area. These events are geared towards fostering connections between colleagues, building a strong team, and having fun together.

Modern Hydrogen is a Seattle-based cleantech startup. We decarbonize natural gas into clean hydrogen at the point of use. Responsibilities:

  • Creates scalable operating systems in manufacturing to aid in volume expansion of new products (build plans, assembly documents, assembly methods, tracking tools, etc.).

  • Plans, documents, and assists in overseeing manufacturing and assembly processes.

  • Provides assistance to engineering through design for manufacturability/assembly (DFM/A) support and informing cost/design/function tradeoffs.

  • Drives best practices in manufacturing for design, assembly, process documentation to increase efficiency and yield.

  • Maintains relationships with vendors, service companies, machine shops, and contract manufacturers to augment internal capabilities and bandwidth.

  • Maintains manufacturing cost models for products.

  • Works with leadership to inform the company's manufacturing strategy.

  • Trains team on DFM/DFA practices and quality best practices to increase quality and decrease build time and cost.

  • Participate in development of assembly tooling.

  • Travel expectation: up to 10% travel required to visit vendor and customer sites.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related

  • 15+ years of experience in a product development or manufacturing environment, ideally within a deep tech/hardware company manufacturing containerized energy systems or modular process skids (e.g. fuel cells, engines, turbines, electrolyzers, flow batteries, etc.)

  • Prior experience setting up and designing a pilot manufacturing line from scratch for energy systems

  • Manufacturing and assembly project management: monitoring and reporting on schedule and progress of manufacturing projects and resolving issues.

  • Understanding of assembly and manufacturing processes and best practices for containerized energy systems or modular chemical process skids. Includes:

  • Assembly of chemical reactors and other chemical process unit operations or energy systems

  • Welding and assembly of structural members and pipes

  • Assembly of electrical and controls lines

  • Movement, alignment, and positioning of large components

  • Relevant QA processes such as dimensional/alignment inspection and leak checks

  • Experience with mechanical quality control and inspection techniques (e.g. laser tracking, CMM, tolerance checks, defining and validating acceptance criteria, SPC, etc.)

  • Comfort and experience in lean manufacturing.

  • Experience with design for manufacturability and assembly.

  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience and enthusiasm to work with vendors, engineering teams, and supply chain personnel.

  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills.

  • Impeccable written and verbal communication

  • Fluency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and MS Project

  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with ASME B31 process gas codes, as well as NFPA 55 + NFPA 70 fire safety codes, in the context of assembling and manufacturing equipment that meets those codes

  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt training and certification

  • Hands-on experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)

  • Experience working in a startup environment.
