Job overview and responsibilities

This role will be responsible for all activities related to the design, development, implementation, and 24x7 production support of United's complex, highly-available NoSQL and BigData platforms. Responsibilities include defining database standards and best practices for NoSQL and Hadoop implementations and programming of data access layer. Responsibilities include defining database standards and best practices for Hadoop, ELK stack, Kafka implementations and programming of data access layer. This role will align with database Architecture and Engineering portfolios to deliver best-in-class Big Data systems to achieve business goals. Database technologies include Hadoop, ELK stack, Kafka, Couchbase, MongoDB, MS SQL Server.

  • Lead a team of engineers responsible for data access programming, physical database design, implementation, and support of Couchbase, MongoDB, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, Kafka messaging

  • Lead a team of database administrators and database developers responsible for the 24x7 support of NoSql and BigData databases including maintaining database service levels and availability goals; database monitoring and performance tuning; database backup and recovery; and resolving production database incidents

  • Manage a Database Architecture and Engineering technology team including performance management, resource and workload planning, project planning, and budget management

  • Collaborate in evolving overall database standards and technology strategies, establish best-practice database design and administration standards

  • Performance tuning - implement KPI metrics for performance improvements; investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production database incidents

  • Researches and evaluates technical solutions including various Hadoop distributions, NoSQL databases, data integration and analytical tools with a focus on enterprise deployment capabilities like security, scalability, reliability, maintainability

  • Assess and leverage legacy data connections/improvements to incorporate into modern Data Lake service

  • Maintains knowledge of market trends and developments in Hadoop related tools, analytics software, and related and emerging technologies like cloud hosting services, Agile/DevOps development processes to recommend and deliver best practice solution

Required

  • BS Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline or 7 years of equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years in database discipline supporting, designing, developing and administering high transactional volume database systems

Working knowledge of Couchbase, MongoDB, MySQL, Spark, Hadoop services, Kafka, Zookeeper, Palantir and cloud foundry

  • Thorough knowledge of database technologies ranging from RDBMS databases to NoSQL databases

  • In-depth understanding of NoSQL High Availability strategies including replica sets, sharding, failover, redundant systems

  • Solid knowledge of NoSQL database concepts including architecture and tuning

  • Experience implementing Big Data solutions based on Hadoop tools like Hive, HDFS and MapReduce in a live production environment

  • Strong background in data modeling, object-oriented programming and/or functional programming

  • Experience in evaluating, selecting and implementing cloud database and storage technologies

  • Experience working with stream processing

  • Experience working with large (1TB+) datasets

Programming experience with one or more of:

  • Python, PHP, Perl, Java, Ruby

  • 2+ years serving in a management/lead role leading and mentoring software engineers (modified TL to management)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Couchbase certification, Mongo Certification or Hortonworks Hadoop Certification a plus

  • AWS and/or Azure solution architect certifications a plus.

  • Minimum 10 years IT experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of Linux proficiency

  • 4+ years of hands on experience installing, configuring, and administering NoSQL databases required, recent experience with Couchbase or MongoDB highly desirable

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

The vision of J&J's new Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center (CDI @ TMC) is to significantly impact healthcare by accelerating the development of breakthrough medical technologies. As a collaboration between Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, and the Texas Medical Center, CDI @ TMC brings together the unique strengths and resources across these great enterprises to create a novel approach for medical device innovation. The team, resources, and access to expertise through CDI enables needs-based ideation, rapid technology prototyping, and pre-clinical / clinical testing with shorter timelines and capital efficiency. There are 3 primary modes of engagement to accelerate medical device development: 1) internal technologies based on concepts generated at CDI or one of J&J's family of companies, 2) external technologies based on IP transferred from universities, hospitals, and inventors, and 3) external companies which take residence at CDI. The team at CDI has a proven track record of successful medical devices and has flexibility to engage in new opportunities across a spectrum of different services and needs, including: independent development, collaborative co-development, machining / prototyping, design for manufacturing, and strategic advising. Summary of Position: CDI is currently recruiting for a new Senior Manager of Technology Development to be based in Houston, TX. This position will be the primary manager of the engineering team responsible for developing new technologies at CDI. The focus of the team is to de-risk technologies in the Feasibility stage and demonstrate proof-of-concept for transition into J&J's product pipeline. This position will be responsible for managing all parts of the development process, including: direct reporting of the engineers, project management and resource allocation, providing technical expertise and guidance, and defining functional requirements for the Feasibility stage. In parallel with management responsibilities, this position may also serve as a technical team leader for projects as needed, including hands-on design work of prototyping and testing. Additional responsibilities include prioritization and planning for the machine shop resources, and working closely with both internal and external stakeholders and experts to define success criteria and milestones for projects. Key Responsibilities: * Manage the core engineering team to drive development of early-stage technologies, execute on project plans, and achieve key milestones and goals * Provide guidance, direction, reviews, and professional development of direct reports * Serve as project manager to oversee plans, budgets, work scope, timelines, and resourcing on individual projects as well as portfolio allocation across the projects * Conduct project reviews for design input requirements and specifications, assessment of new concepts, evaluation of prototypes and test methodologies * Define appropriate process and structure to achieve functional requirements of Feasibility stage * Utilize technical expertise and insights for problem-solving on projects * Lead projects with hands-on technical development as needed * Plan and prioritize machine shop resources for prototyping * Engage with stakeholders to ensure project goals are aligned with business and customer expectations * Invent and patent new ideas and designs, and manage pipeline of disclosures and patent rewards * Provide back-up support for facilities and operational issues as needed. Qualifications * A minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required; Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering is preferred, and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) is strongly preferred * Minimum 10 years of relevant design and development work experience is required, with at least 5 years of management experience with direct reporting of engineering teams. * Minimum 5 years of experience in the medical device field is strongly preferred. * Knowledge of general design engineering and DFMA principles, component manufacturing processes, tooling methodologies and material properties is required * Project planning and management skills are required, with a demonstrated ability to organize work independently and prioritize multiple tasks and activities. * Experience throughout the product development lifecycle from concept to commercialization is required, and demonstrated success with front-end innovation is strongly preferred. * Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities with experience working in a collaborative, multi-functional team environment is strongly preferred. * Demonstrated ability for creative problem-solving, inventing, and ideation is strongly preferred * Effective interpersonal skills & the ability to partner with internal & external customers is required. * Experience with CAD/CAM and design analysis software, design of experiments (DOE), mechanical testing, and geometric tolerances (GD&T) is strongly preferred. * Experience working with vendors and suppliers is strongly preferred. * Strong analytical skills and synthesis of data across a range of different disciplines / fields is preferred. * Effective oral and written communication skills are required, with experience in technical writing of protocols / procedures, test results, project reports and updates. * Experience with intellectual property is strongly preferred, including patent disclosures, landscaping, and analysis of prior art * Ability to deal with a high degree of ambiguity or uncertainty in a dynamic environment, and adapting to changing conditions is strongly preferred * This role may require some travel up to 10% (domestic and/or international) Are you motivated by contributing to innovation in a small-company environment with the big-company impact of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies?
