General Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director, Kid's-Organic Snacks R&D, the Senior Manager is a key member of the R&D/QA Team, and works closely with the Late July Snacks Marketing, Process Engineering, Regulatory, QA and Supply Chain teams as they manage R&D for the Kid's-Organic Snacks business. This includes working with the business teams from early concept development through commercialization to develop new products, line extensions and platforms for the Late July product line by identifying solution alternatives that meet consumer needs and are feasible through the supply chain system. He/she is responsible for deploying and continuously improving the New Product Development & Commercialization Process, supporting annual Quality Improvement goals through execution of plans to reduce complaints and assuring formula & process related execution of Enabler and Quality Improvement initiatives across the Late July business, including technical service and troubleshooting. This role encompasses both management and hands-on responsibilities. The Senior Manager is the key liaison between Marketing, Product & Process development, Packaging Development, Quality Assurance/Snacks Supply Chain (Op's Engineering, Manufacturing Plants), Regulatory and Legal.

The incumbent manages a professional staff of one Scientist and works closely with the Process Development and Process Engineering teams. He/she is responsible for the development and management of Late July Snacks Product department budget. The Senior Manager manages business development opportunities, assesses Contract Manufacturers and Development partners for capabilities to create strategically-aligned opportunities to drive Late July Snacks growth and profitability.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manages and leads the flawless Commercialization of Late July Snacks Late July Snacks products through deployment of development and commercialization standards/success criteria across R&D/QA and forging highly collaborative relationships and communication/documentation mechanisms in partnership with Marketing, Finance, Legal/Regulatory, QA and Supply Chain Management

  • Ensures all proper documentation is done accurately and on schedule.

  • Conducts and leads assessment and capability studies, product startups/commercialization and provides on-site support to Plant Operations for new products, productivity and quality programs

  • Assures that the highest standards of achievement are maintained in all Product Development activities, focusing on understanding the consumer drivers via robust Sensory protocol, process/product interactions, process control strategies, and quality assurance strategies.

  • Fosters an innovation culture in Late July Snacks by continually introducing new ideas and product concepts for new products, quality improvements, and productivity.

  • Provides leadership, guidance, and career development to staff. Anticipates short and long term employee requirements and leads efforts to meet their needs.

  • Develops and manages the Late July Snacks Development budget

Job Requirements:

  • BS and/or MS Food Science or Food or Chemical Engineering (or related degree) and 9-12 years experience in the Snacks Consumer Products industry within R&D with a New Product Technology focus. Experiences desired include New Products, Consumer Testing, QA, Productivity, Commercialization and Staff Management.

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to set the technical strategy with flawless execution.

  • Strong business partner and the creative ability to influence and drive direction.

  • Thorough understanding of Snack food industry, the competitive environment and emerging trends

  • High level of communication/presentation skills, ability to inform, influence, and negotiate across functions

  • Strong managerial, coaching, and development skills with junior, mid-level and senior level professionals

  • Strong creative problem solving and analytical thinking skills

  • Drive for results and a sense of urgency

  • Ability to respond resourcefully to new demands and challenges within an ever-changing business landscape

Working Conditions

Business headquarters location with associated R&D facility, office/lab/manufacturing environment. This position can involve hands-on project involvement, with overall travel time projected at approximately 25 to 30%.

General Summary: The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for the coordination and execution of product development efforts for Late July Snacks initiatives, encompassing tortilla and potato chips, popcorn and snack crackers. This includes new products, line extensions, cost savings, alternate supplier and quality improvements. This role is responsible for ensuring that objectives, product design and timelines are met. The Senior Scientist responds resourcefully to new demands and challenges throughout the product & commercialization process (including bench top, pilot plant, and plant trials to create prototypes for consumer testing, etc.) and implements best practices. He/she must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence decisions within the cross functional team (Marketing, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Process Development and Package Development) and externally with partners (suppliers, Campbell's Center of Excellence, R&D, co-manufacturers). The Senior Scientist is expected to possess and demonstrate a solid understanding of food science, the business, operations and the commercialization processes. Their approach should include a practical application and modification of existing products/new technologies and the identification and innovative creation of new and unique products which achieve business goals. The Senior Scientist provides technical specifications and support to assure smooth roll-outs of new products and processes during plant startups. This includes the provision of comprehensive process documentation to enable smooth commercialization and training of plant personnel. They must support an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk taking. Primary Responsibilities: * Leads the identification, assessment and validation of formulations from bench-top through commercialization. This includes managing the financial aspects of product development including ingredient costs for plant trials * Ensures all proper documentation is done accurately and on schedule as per commercialization processes. Ability to operate in database systems is required. * Conducts and leads assessment and capability studies, product startups/commercialization and provides on-site support to Plant Operations for new products, productivity and quality programs * Fosters an innovation culture by continually introducing ideas and product concepts for new products, quality improvements, and productivity. * Creates, designs, supervises the development of new experimental protocols/best practices required to validate product concepts and prototypes. * Independently directs the activities of outside vendors including ingredients and services.
