Position Overview

City Year Buffalo is seeking a Senior Manager for Learning & Development (L&D) & AmeriCorps Member Experience (ACME). This role will report directly to the Impact Director at City Year Buffalo and be part of the Impact Team.

The SM for L&D & ACME is responsible for planning and implementing a year-long learning and development strategy to prepare City Year Buffalo's AmeriCorps members to deliver high-quality and high-impact service to students in partner schools while increasing their leadership capacity and skills. The SM for L&D & ACME plays a pivotal role in ensuring corps members are prepared with the proper training and learning opportunities throughout their service year. In this role, the SM for L&D & ACME will work closely with City Year Buffalo's Impact staff and Senior Leadership Team.

The SM for L&D & ACME will also ensure that CYBUF AmeriCorps Members have a positive service experience and develop into leaders for life. The SM for L&D & ACME has broad responsibilities to ensure site-wide activities align to support the AmeriCorps Member experience and individual skill development, including retention of ACMs & RACMs.

Additionally, the SM for L&D & ACME will be responsible for managing communication with the corps regarding site policies, collecting feedback to assess the quality of the AmeriCorps Member experience, and providing input into site planning activities. The SM for L&D & ACME also cultivates and manages external partnerships that support these goals. The SM for L&D & ACME will be expected to work closely with the Impact Director to ensure comprehensive Impact Department wide support of AmeriCorps Members. As the "voice for the corps", the SM for L&D & ACME also collaborates cross-departmentally with directors to identify solutions to site-wide challenges.

Job Description

Program Design and Implementation

  • Work with Impact Director to develop and implement a holistic 10-month learning and development strategy for the City Year Buffalo (CYBUF) corps, ensuring content and delivery is aligned with the corps member service implementation calendar and leadership development cycle.

  • Develop facilitation skills and content delivery methods for staff members supporting corps members in service.

  • Lead service impact team on curriculum development and system for requesting and hosting in-school, team-based trainings.

  • Manage City Year Buffalo's professional development program that provides structured reflection and career preparation for corps members to connect personal purpose, values and insights with their service experience and next career steps.

  • Compile and update L&D curriculum, workshop guides, event work plans and content trackers to ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation for the department and site.

  • Oversee logistics and management of large-scale training events and training days.

  • Communicate all L&D-related information to AmeriCorps members and staff so corps and staff are able to access information regarding upcoming opportunities and events.

  • Support the evaluation of training programs by participating in school observations.

  • Oversee planning for smaller learning conferences throughout the year.

Collaboration and Relationship Development:

  • Work closely with Impact Director & Impact Managers to collect regular feedback on learning and training needs.

  • Prepare Impact Managers for upcoming trainings, reflections, and learning sessions.

  • Make formal requests to impact staff for facilitation needs and systems to support preparing staff for learning facilitation.

  • Work closely with Service Leaders and potentially second year AmeriCorps members, on facilitating City Year Buffalo's professional development curriculum.

  • Work with Impact Team to organize monthly curriculum plans and Leadership After City Year (LACY) plans.

  • Observe and coach AmeriCorps Members on their implementation of academic intervention programs and student engagement strategies, providing feedback to support their continued growth

AmeriCorps Member Leadership, Appreciation & Events

  • Own the planning and execution of AmeriCorps Member recognition and appreciation activities, support with planning of other site wide initiatives and activities focused on corps members including event logistics

  • Support site wide corps member leadership development opportunities including Corps & Deans Council, Site Initiatives, Coordinator Roles and cross departmental opportunities

  • Collaborate with Impact Director to schedule LACY opportunities to meet corps members needs and build relationships with career partners based on corps members career interests

  • Build a strong workforce development post-service opportunity pipeline as part of LACY planning program

AmeriCorps Member Feedback & Support

  • Serve as the primary point person for corps member survey completion, review, feedback loop and action steps at a site level as well as supporting alumni data collection and experience data

  • Work with Directors and Executive Director to conduct feedback sessions with AmeriCorps Members to gauge their service experience

  • Review corps member feedback on site wide activities and events, make recommendations for improvements based on trends

AmeriCorps Member Compliance & Benefits Support

  • Collaborate with Buffalo-focused CTA & Admissions team members (HQ) to streamline communication to confirmed incoming AmeriCorps Members and pilot new initiatives based on site data and needs

  • Receive training from HQ and AmeriCorps around onboarding, background check and exiting protocol to support the work around these areas

  • Create a cohesive experience for AmeriCorps Members from confirmation through graduation including the onboarding process, registration and benefits process

  • Monitor site wide retention and partner with Impact Director to track all post-service outcomes, including alumni and those who exit the program early

  • Collaborate with site-level People & Operations team to Implement a site wide process for uniform distribution, serve as site uniform point person with HQ leading on all returns, exchanges and corps member issues

AmeriCorps Member Resources

  • Develop new partnerships to support ongoing corps member needs such as housing, financial concerns, mental health concerns, trauma supports

  • Research, coordinate and collaborate with partners on educational and learning opportunities for the corps related to existing challenges (example: budgeting, filing taxes, financial literacy, etc.)

  • Collaborate with site-level People & Operations team and City Year Headquarters to support AmeriCorps Members in understanding and accessing their existing benefits (example: health benefits, Employee Assistance Program, counseling support services, etc.)

  • Liaison with City Year Headquarters' AmeriCorps Member Experience Team on behalf of City Year Buffalo

AmeriCorps Member Development

  • Support IMs in identifying AmeriCorps Members who would benefit from additional guidance, coaching, or support and identify the proper path to best assist the ACM

  • Build scalable systems and standardized protocols for responding to and supporting members facing personal and professional challenges

  • Collaborate with the Impact Director to identify training that staff members need to support AmeriCorps Members

  • In consultation with Impact Director and site-level People and Operations team, provide collaborative coaching and support to Impact Managers who are supervising AmeriCorps Members experiencing challenges in their service year

  • Support Impact Director and Managers in building AmeriCorps Member investment in the Performance Management Process as a tool for professional development

Returning AmeriCorps Member Recruitment and Team Leadership

  • Collaborate with CPM, Recruitment and Admissions point and align on strategy for recruiting interested AmeriCorps Members including coordinating recruitment events for interested members

  • Develop trainings that emphasize Impact Managers role in cultivating AmeriCorps Member talent, with a focus on Service Leader professional development opportunities

  • In partnership with Impact Director, further develop the Service Leader program in Buffalo

Organizational Initiatives & Site Support

  • Serve as the primary AmeriCorps Member Experience liaison for relevant Headquarters calls, events and initiatives

  • Participate in the hiring process for first year and senior AmeriCorps Members throughout the course of the year

Partner with City Year Buffalo departments and staff through stakeholder engagement, event and service day participation and cross-departmental initiatives as needed to ensure site-wide goals are met
