Overview and Purpose:
Responsible for strategic insight and management of programs and initiatives that affects the district in achieving its long term and overreaching goals. Leads the day-to-day operations of a broader strategic function and shapes the framework of DPS in a forward thinking and dynamic manner. Primary emphasis is achieving results by building engagement and empowering their teams. Manages district wide initiatives and high impact teams, with a greater span of control.
Job Summary:
Provides District leadership related to out-of-school time partnerships, safety during out-of-school time, Whole Child contributions for out-of-school time, and alignment of the department to broader District initiatives. Supervises members of the department who provide support to Discovery Link and grant funded sites as well as whole District programs, such as community partners and data access. Leads the development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of department equity outcomes and culture work. Oversees retention and recruiting efforts for the department (350-400 employees). Develops and oversees strategic planning and execution of data-driven decision making in the out-of-school time realm that impacts students (observation, feedback, coaching, and collaboration) to include community partner and nationally based initiatives as well as tight program evaluation to assess the impact on student academic and social emotional outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic focus: Executes functional or departmental plans and contributes to the development of functional or departmentalstrategies; provides input and advises others on strategy, outside of their function or department. Recommends innovation, significantly modifies and improves current policies and practices. Devises long-term operational goals and makes decisions that affect results delivered.
Operational excellence: Manage and work with respective teams to both influence and implement policies, procedures, programs and initiatives that pertain to their functional unit. Set clear goals, organize work plans, and divide work accordingly. Develops operational plans such as resources, budgets, schedules, and performance.
Management: Apply managerial thinking and decision making to deliver results and ensure project/team success. Provides leadership to other managers, supervisors and teams:
Problem analysis: solve for complex problems that impact broad segments of the district, including: defining, tackling and mitigating issues or situations. Map or assess situations, formulate options and act as a strong tactical decision maker. Use integrated knowledge of several disciplines or areas of expertise to resolve strategic issues.
Measure success: establish targets performance metrics, analyze performance and follow up to ensure the achievement plan is attainable.
Process improvement: analyze past trends, identify gaps, and use in depth knowledge to provide recommendations.
Complexity discretion: work on issues that require in-depth knowledge; apply discretion for decisions that could impact business activities team operations.
Communication: Collaborate with other functions, peers and teams. Gain credibility and cooperation across the organization. Convey progress and goal results with upper management. Conduct trainings, present findings materials and other deliverables.
Team development: Improves team performance through coaching, feedback and mentoring. Entrust and motivate direct reports by providing direction, and facilitate skill building.
Essential Functions:
Leads Grants team in Grant writing, implementation, and reporting.
Works with team members and community partners to develop and refine resources for the field around effective quality out-of-school time program initiatives
Guides the partnership and implements the actions of the Denver Afterschool Alliance (DAA), overseeing shared DAA staff (District staff who support both the District and the work of the Denver Afterschool Alliance)
Leads and oversees the functions of department and DAA support staff
Continues and expands culture and equity growth through strategic initiatives for the department's incredibly diverse team of learners through targeted and specific professional development; develops managers across the department in supervision skills
Leads department in process mapping, registration planning, and implementation for 10,000 families and staff
Supports the development of a department leadership pipeline
Creates a strategic plan to support ongoing sustainability and growth of services across the city
Leads department and District initiatives related to City and District partnership collaborates across functions with departments including Community Use, Food Services, Enterprise Management, Communications, and more
Works collaboratively with department stakeholders to develop efficiencies in processes and improvements in programs that ultimately put Students First
Supports the strategic planning process for the District and schools through the implementation of data-driven decision making for most critical improvements and successes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of effective professional learning programs and methodologies and experience in providing such professional learning to meet the needs of adult learners
Knowledge of budget and financial preparation and management, legal compliance, and HR management
Strong organizational and analytic skills and strong attention to detail
Superior leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, including the ability to motivate and influence others
Ability to develop and interpret data and manage resources
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing team
Ability to multi-task and juggle the management of several high priority projects in parallel
High degree of integrity in handling confidential information
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Strong desire and willingness to support student achievement in traditionally under-served communities
Understanding of Whole Child and Personalized Learning practices as well as knowledge of practices for the design and delivery of high quality afterschool programming and youth development
Education and Experience Requirements:
Minimum Bachelor's Degree, preferred Education or Non-Profit Management
Preferred Master's Degree
Five (5) or more years of related experience in the field of education, youth development, or a closely related field with a minimum of two (2) years of administrative experience
2+ years of management experience
