Position Overview

The Mechanical Engineering Manager is part of the dedicated Point of Care (POC) Sustaining Engineering (SEN) team responsible for coordinating support activities for in vitro diagnostics (IVD) instruments and accompanying eco-system products. The SEN team works closely with Service, Manufacturing, and Quality to drive corrective actions in response to field issues; coordinate platform enhancements; resolve manufacturing obsolescence or quality issues; implement cost reduction programs; and respond to new regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will bring balance to the role by being a technical expert, a coach, and a process leader. They will be responsible for having an aligned agenda for the team that will manage project execution, build team capabilities and consistently achieve business goals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a global team of internal and contract mechanical engineers

  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate staff, assigning them to projects and setting deadlines

  • Set mutual performance expectations with direct reports, monitor progress, recognize accomplishments and support as needed

  • Build team capabilities and capacity through coaching, training and stretch assignments

  • Collaborate with the head of new product development hardware engineering to optimize processes and tools

  • Set quality standards and regularly review team's deliverables

  • Cultivate relationships and networks to achieve business targets

  • Provide team resource plans and budget inputs required to support project demands

  • Represent R&D on the design change review board

Desired Education, Experience, and Knowledge/Skills

  • 10+ years' experience in engineering with 3+ years' of management experience

  • BS in mechanical engineering required with Master's Degree preferred

  • Comfortable operating in a fast paced, multi-functional organization with competing priorities

  • Ability to travel globally

  • Experience in a regulated industry required; FDA preferred

  • Strong verbal, written communications and interpersonal skills.

  • Proactive and forward-thinking, rather than reactive

  • Strong grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals

  • Skilled in systems thinking

  • Problem solving, attention to detail and follow-up

  • Familiar with injection molding, stamping and machining manufacturing processes
