Job Purpose

Preferred for this role to onsite at our Global Technology Center in Reading, PA. Remote will be considered.

Responsible for the design and development of lithium-ion cells used in applications ranging from motive power, reserve power, and related energy storage systems. This role involves a combination of technical expertise, project management skills, and leadership abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Development:

  • Conduct research and analysis to identify new materials, processes, and technologies for improving lithium-ion cell performance, energy density, safety, and cost efficiency.

  • Drive innovative approaches and solutions to enhance lithium-ion cell design and manufacturing processes, including modeling and simulation tools and strategies.

Testing and Evaluation:

  • Lead a team of engineers in design and development of new lithium-ion cells including requirements, modeling and simulation, electro-chemical composition, and overall cell architecture.

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to ensure the successful design and implementation of lithium-ion battery components and systems.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members including chemists, materials engineers, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers.

  • Collaborate with related departments including product development, manufacturing, and testing to successfully develop and optimize overall cell performance.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Document and report on the design, development, and testing of lithium-ion cells, including preparing technical reports, design specifications, design drawings, and test plans.

Quality Assurance:

  • Develop and implement quality control measures to ensure lithium-ion cells meet industry standards and performance specifications.

  • Collaborate with quality teams to analyze and address any issues related to lithium-ion cell production and performance.

Project Management:

  • Manage design projects and tasks related to the development and testing of lithium-ion cells, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in lithium-ion cell design and manufacturing processes, and implement changes to improve product performance, reliability, and safety.

  • Recruit, train, and mentor a team of engineers, providing professional development opportunities and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Set performance goals, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance evaluations for team members.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Materials, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent. Advanced degree preferred.

  • 5+ years relevant engineering experience or 2+ years with advanced degree.

  • Experience in lithium-ion cell development, including knowledge of cell chemistry, electrode design, cell assembly, and testing methodologies preferred.

  • Experience in process engineering in general and lithium-ion cell manufacturing specifically preferred.

  • Experience in project management and leading engineering teams.

  • Strong understanding of materials, processes, and manufacturing techniques preferred.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to lithium-ion cells (e.g. UN/DOT, IEC, ISO,) preferred.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

  • This role will have extensive travel to start, expect between 30-40% of both international and domestic travel

General Job Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to do overnight travel

  • This position will work in an office setting, expect minimal physical demands.
