Classification Definition

Under the general supervision of the Pool Manager or Assistant Pool Manager, accomplishes specialized work in protecting life, preventing accidents, enforcing safety regulations, providing instructions, and assisting in the operation and supervision of the public swimming pool; supervises swimming activities in and around pools to ensure that policies, rules and regulations are observed and enforced, and that no hazard to safety is created; warns swimmers of improper activities or danger; enforces pool regulations and water safety policies; rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning; administers first aid in the event of injury; administers artificial respiration if required, and performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of equipment operations relating to swimming pools; knowledge of the means of lifesaving and of artificial respiration; knowledge of first aid and it application. Ability to direct the activities and work of others; meet and deal tactfully with the public; demonstrate swimming proficiency, and be in top physical condition at all times.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 17 years of age.

  • Two (2) years experience in lifesaving, swim instruction or advanced swimming.

  • Possession of current Senior Lifesaving and Water Safety Instructor Certificates.

  • Within the first six weeks of employment, obtain and maintain current certification in Community or Standard First Aid and community CPR (which includes infant, child and adult CPR). Only certification through the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or comparable organization will be accepted.

Selection Process:

Only those candidates possessing the most desirable qualifications will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selected applicant will be subjected to a drug screening and fingerprint check.

Veterans Preference Credit Eligibility:

Veterans of the armed forces, who have been discharged or released from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable (Government Code: 18540.4), shall receive an additional five (5) points to their final examination score for ranking purposes only. This preference will apply only to the first appointment to any regular full-time City appointment.
