DEFINITION

Under the direction/supervision of the Library Director, the part-time Senior Librarian performs duties in the professional job category along with other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Library Director in the overall operation of the Library, including development and administration of policies, the departmental budget, funding, plan of service; compiles, analyzes, and prepares reports and/or conducts research and related statistics and documentation.

  • Schedule, coordinate and assign work of professional, clerical, and technical Library personnel to ensure adequate desk coverage and the completion of duties and tasks.

  • Verify attendance and hours worked; Distribute, collect, and verify employee timesheets, either as hard copies or electronically, and ensure staff hours are properly and accurately recorded and submitted in a timely manner.

  • Manage the processing of invoices and payments, monitor budgetary expenditures and prepare expense and budget reports as needed.

  • Facilitate and coordinate Library meeting room facilities, including but not limited to rental quotes, schedule, setup, payment, access control, and audio-visual services.

  • Oversee site maintenance, including submitting and tracking Library maintenance requests and regular cleaning and repairs.

  • Assist Library patrons and resolve customer service issues through multiple communication channels, including in-person, phone, and email.

  • Effectively communicate with all Library staff regarding status of schedules, meeting room setups, facility issues, programs, and events.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires:

Knowledge of: The principles, practices, technology, and equipment associated with operating a modern library including but not limited to adult services, community programming, and branch operations; the applications of electronic data processing to library operations; research and analytical methods; the principles of supervision and training.

Ability to: Meet medical standards for the class prescribed in the City of Redondo Beach Medical Standards, and physical employment standards prescribed in the Industrial Relations and Insurance Support Services Job Analysis; satisfactorily perform required duties including but not limited to the ability to serve as a technical expert in adult services; learn and apply the principles and practices of effective supervision, training and performance evaluation, budget preparation and administration; learn the procedures of the Library Commission; communicate effectively in writing and orally; reason logically and creatively; demonstrate initiative; work independently and on project matrix teams; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California.

Education and Experience: Graduation from an American Library Association accredited college or university with a Master of Library Science degree and two (2) years of full time paid professional level experience in a public library.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process may include but is not limited to: Application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. All employment offers made by the City are contingent upon establishing proof of a prospective candidate's legal authorization to work in the United States and successfully passing all components of the pre-employment process, such as: reference check, background investigation, fingerprint criminal history check, post-offer drug test, post-offer psychological and post-offer medical examination, the cost of which will be borne by the City.
