The Role

Lumen is looking for a Systems Engineer to support design efforts in the Voice Engineering organization. This person must be familiar with standard system administration functions, scripting, and virtualization, all in an effort to support our VoIP network elements. Our primary VoIP vendor is Ribbon and Metaswitch.

Leveraging advanced engineering and network principals, theories, concepts, and technology familiarization, candidate will provide technical leadership for the Core Voice Engineering team, guiding the advancement and evolution of our Core VoIP, server architectures and solutions. The role requires significant collaboration and interaction with other Engineering groups, Product Management, Planning, Security, Network Operations, IT organizations, vendors, and others to define technical requirements and implementation designs that create new, enhance existing, and life-cycle managed VoIP-based products and solutions.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Candidate must produce detailed engineering requirements and design documentation, test strategies and requirements, production network deployment strategies and procedures, and support network deployment and implementations of various voice technologies and platforms including:

  • Ribbon EMS/PSX/NFS/SGX server hardware and software

  • Various virtual server deployments to support VoIP based applications

  • Under limited supervision, the candidate will be responsible for design, engineering, and development of portions of major projects or entire projects of lesser complexity, and effectively communicating design and plans to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Responsibilities will also include defining test plan requirements, supporting the execution of platform certifications and related proof of concepts as well as lifecycle management.

  • Candidate will lead efforts creating development test environments, including physical and logical setup.

  • Candidates will also be a Tier IV escalation point of contact for Production issues. Installing hardware and software for the network

  • Keeping systems operating efficiently by performing any necessary upgrades and repairs in our lab environment

  • Planning a strategy to maintain system security on the computers and the network as a whole

  • Optimizing and evaluating the system regularly

  • Evaluating and testing diagnostic tools/scripts

  • Training or directing users on the correct use of software and hardware within the system

  • Performing problem-solving tasks when alerted by a user or monitoring system

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • 5+ years of experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and ESXi.

  • Detailed working knowledge of server hardware troubleshooting.

  • Experience with configuration management tools like Ansible and Terraform.

  • Working knowledge of networking concepts, including routing, VLANS, firewalls and load balancers.

  • Working knowledge of backup and recovery procedures and tools (any vendor).

  • Working knowledge of virtual machine setup and management (any vendor).

  • Working knowledge of external storage management (any vendor).

  • Working knowledge of scripting languages and automation of diagnostic and test tools

  • Work within Agile framework to identify, create, design, and integrate processes for repeatable, automated software delivery.

  • Strong understanding of SIP and VoIP networks, Ribbon specifically
