SUMMARY:

Perform all required laboratory functions necessary to support the manufacturing operations with the plant's operating conditions in order to assist in the coordination of activities in the plant regarding plant leadership, production, logistics, SAP requirements, new product introductions and safety in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct routine analytical tests using complex instrumentation to determine chemical and physical properties of raw materials, process, and final product samples.

  • Provide leadership in determining required equipment, technical upgrades and capital expenditures

  • Provide leadership in training of laboratory and production personnel

  • Provide technical leadership in introducing new products, developing standards, and laboratory techniques

  • Advise operating units to deviations from standard product quality.

  • Troubleshoot lab, plant problems and participate in root cause analysis for equipment failures, process upsets, etc.

  • Assist production units in trial runs for developmental products or equipment tests.

  • Organize work efficiently to analyze unscheduled/ad hoc samples.

  • Generate and maintain records per lab QA ISO-9001 and ISO-14001 procedures.

  • Point of contact for coordination between R&D and plant activities

  • Accurately enter data into logbooks, computer, and other documentation forms.

  • Communicate vital information and requirements to oncoming shift and/or supervision.

  • Analyze standards and perform routine calibration to ensure quality results.

  • Enter results of control samples on control charts and attempt to correct "out-of-control" situations.

  • Ensure routine care and maintenance of sophisticated equipment.

  • Assist in assembly and test of new lab equipment.

  • Coordinate contract lab testing.

  • Interface with maintenance / supervision to expedite repairs.

  • Maintain product and raw material specification database.

  • Understand regulations regarding shipping, packaging, and handling of products, raw materials, and waste.

  • Generate, maintain, and communicate environmental reports to corporate, state, and federal organizations.

  • Monitor environmental waste streams and generate waste characterization for all plant streams for disposal.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS Chemistry or related degree. Master of Science a plus

  • 8 years related laboratory experience in chemical manufacturing environment

  • Technical writing ability and knowledge of basic scientific principles.

  • Mathematical and mechanical aptitude.

  • Health hazard analysis experience.

  • Database management experience.

  • Can operate GC, titration, FTIR and personal computer

  • Required OSHA, EPA, & DOT training

(classroom training is applicable) * Experience working from schematics (classroom training is applicable) * This position requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by export laws of the US.
