Senior Laboratory Technician

SUMMARY

Perform laboratory testing to determine the physical characteristics of samples designated by clients. Performs basic day to day laboratory duties as directed by the Lab Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Adhere to API Standard 19C, API Recommended Practice 19D, standard operating procedures, and other industry standards.

  • Independently performs testing on proppant samples such as sieve analysis, fluid rheology, and conductivity and permeability.

  • Record operating data from laboratory equipment including flow pumps, pressure transducers, gauges, and balances.

  • Operate laboratory equipment such as balances, ovens, slot flows, rheometers, and presses.

  • Perform research and development using innovative testing techniques.

  • Perform customized advanced testing based on client needs.

  • Record all data and results on bench sheets with accuracy and responsibility.

  • Calibrate and perform maintenance on laboratory equipment as needed for which the technician has been adequately trained and has been verified to operate correctly in accordance with applicable standards and sound laboratory practice.

  • Responsible for preparing client reports and ensuring such reports are accurate.

  • Work independently on projects while maintaining a team atmosphere with other technicians.

  • Train new personnel in their areas of work including procedures and proper testing techniques.

  • Perform quality control testing and maintain high level of quality for laboratory testing.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

  • Ensure all safety guidelines are always followed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree preferred; 5 plus years related work experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree.

Mechanical aptitude is required. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 10 pounds, up to 25 pounds and up to 40 pounds. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

ProTechnics requires laboratory technicians to meet the following qualifications:

  • Pass the drug and alcohol test specified by ProTechnics for safety-sensitive employees.

  • Be able to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions to nausea when odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and explosives. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

  • The noise level in the environment is moderate.
