General Description

Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in the field of community corrections with juvenile offenders. The Senior Juvenile Counselor must be capable of performing all the general duties of a Juvenile Counselor. In addition, the Senior Juvenile counselor will assist with training and mentoring new officers and facilitating groups. The Senior Juvenile Counselor will utilize counseling skills, oversee, process, record, evaluate and make recommendations on all incoming referrals and/or juveniles held in attention.

Hours of Work

  • The position requires shift work consisting of working weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and overtime.

Essential Functions

  • All duties as delineated in the Juvenile Counselor Job Description apply.

  • Conducts preliminary conferences with juveniles and their families.

  • Prepares summaries with recommendations for court intervention.

  • Assumes additional duties on a current and continuing basis.

  • Serves as trainer/mentor.

  • Works with management to help improve policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Forms productive and constructive relationships with clients, judiciary, staff, management, and ancillary agencies.

  • Participates in stakeholder and probation committees as needed.

May be responsible for:

  • Training/mentoring/coaching team members

  • Training and working in Central Control

  • Completing intakes

  • Is competent to work effectively with most all cases and assignments.

  • Possesses a working knowledge of the justice system, relevant laws, court rules, administrative orders, Administrative Office policies and procedures, and the operation of the assigned unit.

  • Competently handles more challenging caseloads.

  • Manages multiple priorities with minimal assistance.

  • Recognizes and diagnoses problems and demonstrates competent problem-solving and decision-making skills on a continuing basis.

  • Demonstrates a continuing awareness of system issues and brings them to the attention of management.

  • Demonstrates competent written and verbal communications.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferably with major course work in criminal justice, law enforcement, sociology, psychology, or related field.

  • Certification from the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

  • Minimum 3 years working in probation, criminal justice, or social service field preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Must be a United States citizen.

  • Must be resident of Illinois.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Must pass a background check.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to restrain juveniles once properly trained.

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • May involve long periods sitting and driving in a car.
