As a member of the Alabama Interactive team, you will work as a team to drive application and adoption of emerging technologies to create effective and citizen-centric, digital government solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate application software packages and make recommendations to management.

  • Identify conflicting business practices and integration issues, suggesting alternative solutions.

  • Participate in business and IT project estimation activities, from the position of being a subject matter expert.

  • Assists with the on-boarding of new Developers (shadowing, training, mentoring, and support).

  • Leads technical decisions in the team and functional area. Expertly designs and owns technical solutions for broad or complex requirements with insightful and strategic approaches. Describes, analyzes, and convinces others about major technical tradeoffs and decisions.

  • Identifies, defines, and solves strategically important problems. Can interpret, add to, and execute against cross-functional strategies. Works with key stakeholders to make critical decisions.

  • Leads initiatives and meetings within the team and functional area. Motivates and empowers teammates to achieve a higher level of performance. The quality of all work done by the team is indistinguishable from the engineer, regardless of who did it. Garners resources for the whole team to complete its work.

  • Initiates and facilitates meaningful discussions around complex issues. Influences decision making and prioritization across multiple teams. Trusted to communicate the Engineering brand externally. Analyzes the interview and on-boarding processes and suggests any needed improvements.

  • Provide technical expertise within an assigned business unit/area in the analysis, design, and development of business applications.

  • Provides product knowledge to less experienced personnel.

  • Knows the customer's business and seeks information about the real underlying needs, beyond those expressed initially.

  • Independently scopes flexible technical solutions. Anticipates technical uncertainties. Trusted to design and implement team-level technical solutions. Guides team to improve code structure and maintainability. Garners resources required to complete their work.

  • Considers the effects of their work across multiple teams and proactively manages potential issues to advance strategic initiatives and company goals.

  • Identifies metrics to measure impact and support broader strategic initiatives. Identifies team-impacting problems, suggests solutions, and drives resolutions. Mentors junior engineers both technically and culturally.

  • Effectively communicates complex technical issues to a cross-functional audience. Engages in productive dialogue involving multiple viewpoints or conflicting perspectives both inside the team and between teams.

  • Evaluates trade-offs and effectively prioritizes tasks within team in alignment with strategic initiatives and company goals.

  • Takes ownership of their technical solutions. Identifies opportunities to help teammates in achieving team goals.

  • Adapts message and sets appropriate context for a diverse technical audience.

  • Initiates conversations to get the support/clarity necessary to carry out a task.

  • Identifies appropriate form of communication given the specific situation.

  • Participates in the hiring process and delivers clear and concise feedback on candidates.

  • Formulate and define application scope and objectives; devise and modify procedures to solve business problems.

  • Design, code, test, debug and document programs according to requirements.

  • Participate in business and IT project estimation activities.

  • Collaborate with business partners, and other technical staff to understand user requirements, identify technical approaches, and create solutions.

  • Performs development tasks to upgrade and maintain existing applications.

  • Communicates with their manager if they need clarification or disagree with the strategic reasoning.

  • Objectively represents their feature area in cross-team settings. Has a strong working knowledge of their individual domain.

  • Effectively communicates their individual work. Asks clarifying questions to confirm understanding of problems and/or next steps and follows up if necessary.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, or equivalent, in area of specialty; Advanced degree preferred.

  • Work Experience: At least 5 years' experience in the field or related area.

  • Required skills:

  • Highly proficient in Java, JavaScript, HTML, etc, as appropriate to the team and applications of focus.

  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamental principles of functional and unit testing and relational database technologies.

  • Ability to guide a team of Developers through a project to completion.

  • Responsible for adding to the teams existing base of product knowledge and expertise through participation in internal or external training sessions.

  • Demonstrates a consistent understanding of business application design, development, installation, and refactoring.

  • Strong in both breadth and depth of experience with required programming languages and development techniques.

  • Demonstrates proficiency within their knowledge of industry specifics, including software security best practices, Payment Card Industry, and large-scale application architectures.

  • Ability to identify, develop, and document business requirements, technical requirements, and functional design.

  • Familiarity with Software Quality Assurance and ability to test and automate tests.

  • Advanced understanding and ability to use the specific language your job requires.

  • Capable of complex project work while balancing application support responsibilities.
