Job Description: & Qualifications
We work together with outside counsel to operate as a global team delivering world-class legal, tax and audit services to client groups throughout the company.
Provides strategic intellectual property advice to global business and legal colleagues;
Understands various forms of intellectual property protection, and applies them to best protect the proprietary innovations developed by the company;
Provides IP-related counseling to internal clients, including providing patent landscaping analyses, patentability assessments, and assessments of patent protection for various products;
Provides IP-related due diligence assessments regarding potential corporate and/or technology acquisitions;
Applies deep expertise in U.S patent law and patent practice and superior working knowledge of foreign patent law and practice;
Leads team that manages outside counsel representing the company in post-grant reviews, inter partes reviews, oppositions, and nullity actions before the U.S. and foreign patent offices;
Negotiates and drafts IP-related agreements, including licensing agreements and joint development agreements;
Provides support to in-house transactional attorneys on IP-related transactions;
Provides support to in-house litigation attorneys on IP-related litigations;
Develop initiatives for the reduction, control and budgeting of fees and costs.
Juris Doctorate from accredited law school
Membership in good standing of the Michigan Bar (or member in good standing of another state bar and eligible for RIHC status in Michigan)
Registered to practice before USPTO required
7+ years of experience practicing as a patent attorney in a law firm or in-house legal department
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering preferred or advanced degree and/or substantial industrial experience in semiconductors, communications and/or software industry strongly preferred
Experience investigating, researching, and providing general legal advice concerning a broad range of questions and circumstances pertaining to intellectual property that arise in a company's day to day business activities to ensure that company personnel are aware of, and in compliance with, applicable laws and regulations.
Significant experience drafting and negotiating agreements with IP content
Hands-on experience drafting and prosecuting at least 100 U. S. patent applications, with a background in prosecution of applications in Europe and Asia a strong plus
Demonstrated ability to conduct freedom-to-operate analyses for new products, including preparation of opinions of counsel relating to non-infringement and invalidity;
Ability to work directly with research and engineering personnel to capture inventions and resolve IP questions
