Under supervision, to build, test, implement and support the IT infrastructure in the cloud and on-premises, while executing strategy set by Architects. To evaluate the current systems for effectiveness, making recommendations regarding the scalability of such systems, and troubleshooting any problems that arise during the use of the system.

Typical Tasks

  • Evaluates vendor solutions to ensure compliance with requirements and cost-effectiveness; evaluates future technologies and makes recommendations;

  • Leads or provides technical direction for the planning, creating, and execution of testing efforts; ensures that tests evaluate all possible impacts on the current infrastructure;

  • Assists in the design and leads the implementation of solutions for intrusion detection and notification, security auditing, alerting, and response, virus detection and removal, password complexity enforcement, and media protection;

  • Directs efforts to demonstrate that information systems are compliant with appropriate County policies, industry standards, government regulations, and contractual requirements;

  • Verifies stability, interoperability, portability, security, or scalability of system architecture;

  • Establishes baselines and configuration control, operational metrics, systems environment standards;

  • Collaborates in establishing county-wide standards, guidelines, and procedures for server equipment and servers including the redesign of infrastructure components;

  • Provides technical leadership, coaching/mentoring to team members; recommends training programs targeting specific areas of improvement;

  • Develops custom integration solutions including major enhancements, interfaces, functions and features;

  • Leads the development of contingency plans including reliable backup and restore procedures; identifies business continuity/disaster recovery risks and mitigation plans;

  • DevelopsSLAsorOLAs; works with auditors and security groups to ensure adherence to governance, regulations, and compliance with policies and procedures;

  • Researches, identifies and evaluates ways to improve systems administration tasks such as patching, imaging, server provisioning, and overall automation of repeatable tasks;

  • Identifies discrepancies resulting from security audits, develops plans for corrective action, and tracks actions to closure;

  • Leads in the development, build, installation, configuration, and testing of infrastructure on-premise and for cloud solutions;

  • Analyzes metrics to understand performance to meetSLAsandOLAs, and identifies opportunities for continuous improvements;

  • Works with Analysts, Architects, and stakeholders to understand requirements, and explains tonon-SMEshow the proposed solution will support their requirements;

  • Participates in short-term planning efforts with project team and stakeholder IT groups;

  • Monitors infrastructure performance, evaluates current systems for effectiveness; makes recommendations regarding the scalability, availability, reliability and performance; forecasts utilization patterns and identifies modifications or upgrades;

  • Evaluates future technologies and makes recommendations;

  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering or related field,

and

Nine (9) years of experience in Systems Administration, Networking, and/or Server Support roles. Three (3) years of this experience must be at a level comparable to the County's Infrastructure Engineer classification.

OR

Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college,

and

Eleven (11) years of experience in Systems Administration, Networking, and/or Server Support roles. Three (3) years of this experience must be at a level comparable to the County's Infrastructure Engineer classification.

Experience leading project teams is preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.

  • Depending on the position, related certifications may be required or desirable.

Knowledge of:

  • Integration solutions including major enhancements, interfaces, functions and features;

  • Systems administration improvement tasks such as patching, imaging, server provisioning, and overall automation of repeatable tasks;

  • Security audits and plans for corrective action;

  • Solutions for intrusion detection and notification, security auditing, alerting, and response, virus detection and removal, password complexity enforcement, and media protection;

  • Potential security violations;

  • Enhancements for improved systems availability, reliability and performance;

  • Metrics to understand performance and identifies opportunities for continuous improvements;

  • Systems environment standards;

  • Procedures which include change management, incident management, and problem escalation;

  • Service Level Agreements and Operating Level Agreements;

  • Infrastructure solutions, test activities/results, installation instructions and other system-related information.

Ability to:

  • Develop integration solutions;
