Under the Chief Strategy Office, the Senior Impact Manager will join a small team supporting an emerging function at Pivotal. The Senior Impact Manager will help identify and review potential investments through a learning-by-doing approach and be a strong thought partner across a broad range of stakeholders. The Senior Impact Manager will develop new grant and gift concepts, manage existing relationships with partners, and monitor progress across learning journey initiatives. The Senior Impact Manager will be expected to be a coordinator of experts more than an expert on each topic.

This is a Limited Term Employee (LTE) position and is expected to have a duration of 3 years.

Role responsibilities

Strategy Management & Development:

  • Partner with the Senior Director to design and refine and implement action learning programs that deliver impact in assigned areas of focus and create learning opportunities for the team.

  • Develop and maintain key relationships and inform strategy on crucial program and policy areas.

Grant and Portfolio Management:

  • Identify, develop, and manage a portfolio of philanthropic partnerships through a combination of individual grants and partnerships and, together and in partnership with intermediaries.

  • Engage closely with the Office of the General Counsel and grant and contract administrators to ensure all Pivotal Ventures processes and protocols are followed, and trouble shoot issues as they arise in grant development and management.

  • Regularly check in with partners to share information and gather updates across the team's portfolio(s).

  • Find opportunities for partner collaboration, make connections to improve efficiency and impact, and convene partners when appropriate.

  • Engage with donors in key focus areas to develop a network of funding partners to cultivate a learning network.

Internal Reporting:

  • Regularly engage with and update the Senior Director and discuss key issues to ensure overall strategic alignment; work to connect the dots across other program strategies across Pivotal Ventures and other ecosystem partners.

  • Engage with Pivotal Ventures teammates as appropriate to ensure coordination where strategies intersect with Pivotal Ventures programs; with particular emphasis on engagement with the Program Strategy team.

  • As needed, update the CRM with relevant information on the Senior Directors network and strategic engagements.

  • Lead the drafting and production of various documents to keep the Senior Director informed, including summaries of relevant research developments, current events, programmatic overviews, investment tracking documents, and evaluations of investments.

Support Learning Opportunities:

  • Develop and implement virtual and in-person learning opportunities for the Chief Strategy Office including identifying experts, preparing experts, and preparing materials that support each session.

  • Develop and implement learning trips for the Senior Director that support their building of their network and learning.

Be an Active, Engaged Member of a Lean Team:

  • Share insights and takeaways about strategy development and execution across Pivotal's Program Strategy and Investment teams to improve overall team performance and learning.

  • As needed, ensure Pivotal leadership (Executive Leadership Team and others) are kept abreast of learnings, insights and planning for the work of the Chief Strategy Office.

  • Be an active and transparent member of the broader Pivotal Ventures team by actively participating in Pivotal employee meetings, activities and events and seek opportunities to engage the entire Pivotal team in the emerging work of the function.

  • Provide information and feedback in a timely, humble manner to ensure transparency and shared accountability across staff, regardless of job responsibilities.

  • Actively advise and collaborate with private offices and communications teams to set and drive strategies for communications objectives related to this and other program strategy areas.

  • Inform communications content development related to key areas of social impact focus.

  • Develop/inform talking points and other messaging on related policies and research from the field to support engagement with decision makers or partners.

Qualifications

  • At least 10-15 years of philanthropic and/or social impact experience.

  • Experience cultivating and managing relationships with senior-level stakeholders including donors, leaders, champions, and implementing partners. This includes an understanding of the priorities, concerns, and needs of different types of stakeholders and how to manage and navigate them.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products.

  • Ability to travel, as needed.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with grantmaking, including grants for 501c3 and 501c4 organizations that build organizational capacity and strengthen their financial sustainability.

  • Experience supporting high-profile principals, and the discretion, instinct, and professionalism it entails.

Base annual compensation range for this role is from $207,100 - 221,300. This is a Limited Term Employee (LTE) position, based in Kirkland, WA, or remote and is expected to have a duration of 3 years. This means that, absent some change, the position will end within that timeframe as defined in the offer letter. The limited duration of the position does not alter the at-will nature of the position or work at Pivotal Ventures.
