Medtronic Ops Technology & Digitalization team is looking for a Senior Ignition Developer to work in the Digital Performance Management Team (DPM) to support Medtronic Operations. An ideal candidate for this position will be a self-motivated individual with a thorough understanding of data collection and visualization technologies and proven experience in Ignition (Inductive Automation), Kepware (OPC), HiveMQ (MQTT), Snowflake, Kafka, PostgreSQL, SQL Database, etc. The ideal candidate would also have experience with manufacturing automation software such as C#, Python, PLC and familiar with Industry 4.0 technology like IIoT sensor, Artificial Intelligent (AI), Machine Learning (ML) modeling. The candidate must have strong problem solving and analytic skills in addition to excellent written and oral communication competencies.

A Day in the Life

The Senior Ignition Developer will lead the development of Digital Performance Management tools such as OEE LiveLink, Tier Boards LiveLink, Production Boards/Digital Pitch, future Ignition apps, corresponding data collection from automated equipment controller, manual operator interfaces and interfaces to other Manufacturing Systems like Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Statistical Process Control (SPC). He will act as SME for all Ignition Apps, will be the liaison with IT and key stake holders; and will lead all development activities, in-house and third-party.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support Operations Team to integrate new and/or existing equipment and interfaces to other Manufacturing Systems (MES and SPC) as needed.

  • Support Operations Team to define workstation workflow for automated equipment controller utilizing standard work principles.

  • Participate and collaborate in cross-functional teams including QA, product/process engineering and Operations users for gathering requirements and defining project scope for new Dashboards and/or Applications.

  • Support Operations Team to create a work breakdown structure (WBS) as inputs for project plan, schedule, budget, risks, and deliverables.

  • Develop Ignition software solutions by consulting with end-users, developing systems requirements, understanding usage and work processes, and following the software development lifecycle (SDLC).

  • Lead all Ignition development activities, in-house and contractors.

  • Design, development and launch of new dashboards: OEE LiveLink, Tier Board LiveLink, Digital Pitch and future Ignition apps.

  • Meet with operations and engineering users, often on the production floor, to build business requirements and use-cases.

  • Create highly visual documentation (flowcharts, process maps, sequence diagrams) to help all stakeholders reach a common understanding.

  • Develop software in close communication with end users.

  • Develop software follows the established solution architecture and principles.

  • Document system requirements and design, create system test plan and test cases; execute test cases and document test results to support software validation activities.

  • Work with other team members, QA and process SMEs to assess risk during three project phases: project initiation, pre-validation test assessment and post-validation test assessment.

  • Communicate status updates to key stakeholders.

  • Candidate must be capable of recognizing factors that could negatively affect project timelines / deliverables and effectively communicate impact to direct manager.

  • Support Operations Team to analyze production/manufacturing problems/issues related to equipment or automation software and determining root cause.

  • Proactively and reactively resolve day-to-day production issues.

  • Provide technical engineering support for 24x7 Manufacturing Operations as needed.

  • Review department specifications and process documentation to ensure compliance with FDA regulations and Medtronic internal quality policies.

Must Have Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline
  • A minimum of 4 years of automation experience in a manufacturing environment.

Software experience needed in this role includes:

  • Ignition Certified (Inductive Automation)
  • Experienced in at least one of the following languages: Python, PL/SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MS SQL, Snowflake), C#, JavaScript, ASP.NET
  • Familiar with MQTT, OPC, Kafka, Power BI, REST/SOAP API

Nice to Have

  • Working knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) software systems such as Camline SPACE, Advantive InfinityQS

  • Working knowledge of MES (FACTORYworks, Critical Manufacturing)

  • Linux and Unix OS experience

  • Web services programming experience (WCF, Rest, gRPC)

  • Experience with industry standard equipment interface protocol such as SECS/GEM, OPC, CAMX

  • Experience with troubleshooting automated equipment, machine vision and equipment programmable logic controller (PLC)

  • Solid understanding of SDLC and Agile testing practices - experience in all phases of development process (VOC, analysis, design, coding, testing, validation, documenting, deploying, and support and maintain)

  • Ability to meet deadlines, self-motivated and shows initiative

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to communicate to all levels (operations, engineering, and management)

  • Strong aptitude to learn new technology and take on new challenges

  • Continuous improvement focus, concern for quality

  • Lean Manufacturing and Medical device manufacturing experience

  • Experience with Industry 4.0 technologies such as sensor for real-time data collection, AI/ML and digital twin
