CLASS TITLE: Sr. HVACR Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Field Representative, HVAC

DEFINITION: Installs, repairs, and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Installs, repairs, maintains, and services a wide variety of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment including oil and gas fired hot water and low-pressure steam boiler burners, pumps, compressors, condensers, electronic and pneumatic temperature control systems, and related parts and assemblies.

Screws, bolts, and brazes parts to assemble HVACR components such as motors, pneumatic and electronic controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, and pipes.

Diagnoses malfunctions of HVACR equipment. Evaluates and tests equipment and component operations.

Dismantles systems and components. Replaces and adjusts defective or worn parts.

Records and maintains accurate records of work performed, time and materials used. Prepares lists to ensure efficient use of parts and supplies to be requisitioned for assigned jobs.

Drives an automobile or light truck to transport workers and equipment to and from job sites. Lifts and carries HVACR equipment, parts, tools, and supplies. Climbs ladders, crawls, bends, and stoops to access HVACR systems.

Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisor/ manager(s) and other employees.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.

Possession of a State of Maryland journey HVACR license or an equivalent fulfills experiential requirement.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a State of Maryland journey HVACR license or an equivalent.

Possession of a Type I and II technician's certification (CFC certification) approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.

Possession of a Baltimore County journey gas fitter license or an equivalent preferred.

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and practices of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration repair. Knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations governing refrigerant handling and disposal.

Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment. Skill in testing and diagnosing malfunctioning equipment and systems.

Skill in determining necessary procedures for repair. Skill in selecting appropriate tools, equipment, and parts needed to complete work. Skill in leading and instructing others. Skill in keeping records of work performed.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting, and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight, ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs and the use of tools and equipment.

Works in confined spaces in proximity to loud machinery, frequently requires accessing and positioning oneself to reach limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.

Recognizes exposure to live circuits and/or operating machinery in adverse weather conditions and travel to sites throughout Baltimore County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.

In addition to working the assigned work schedule, persons appointed to this class work scheduled overtime and must be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime calls before and after standard scheduled hours of work.

Persons appointed to this class may be requested to work an alternative schedule or shift temporarily as designated by supervisor.

A license to drive in the State of Maryland and the ability to drive a pickup truck or van is required.

License(s) if/when required for this position are subject to verification and must be maintained in good and active standing during the duration of employment without lapse. Lapse or void in valid/active licensure may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Attendance and participation in training and related activities to attain gas fitter licensure and/or gas-related work certifications.

Some positions in this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

FLSA: Non-exempt

SALARY: Grade 11 on the AFSCME payscale $29.78 to $40.78 per hour

Pre-Employment Requirements:

The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
